Job summary

WSP in the U.S. is looking for a Senior Pipeline Engineer in Houston, Texas, responsible for collaborating on pipeline design and executing engineering support throughout the lifecycle of projects. Ideal candidates will have 5–7 years of relevant experience and a degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering.

This role includes aspects such as project management, engineering analysis, and interacting with clients, alongside a comprehensive benefits package including medical and retirement savings plans.

Qualifications

  • 5–7 years of pipeline design experience in consulting or pipeline operating company contexts.
  • Registration as Engineer in Training (EIT) minimum; Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • Knowledge of liquids and gas design codes and regulations.

Job description

Senior Pipeline Engineer

Location: Chicago, Illinois (additional locations considered: Indianapolis, IN; Cincinnati, OH; Cleveland, OH; Columbus, OH; Lansing, MI; Holland, MI; Detroit, MI; Houston, TX; Tampa, FL; East Chicago, IN; Traverse City, MI; Novi, MI; Kansas City, MO.)

Responsibilities
  • Safely perform work both in the field and office and operate company vehicles.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering staff on pipeline design throughout the lifecycle including planning, feasibility studies, route selection, permitting, detailed design, procurement, construction, and deactivation/demolition.
  • Provide engineering support for pipeline routing studies, stress analysis, and mechanical detailed design of liquid, gas, and/or slurry pipeline systems, including DOT‑regulated pipelines and terminal/station pumping & piping.
  • Participate in field/site walks and coordinate field investigation work for surveys, utility investigations, environmental delineations, geotechnical investigations, and hydrologic assessment to support design.
  • Coordinate engineering and survey services for right‑of‑way acquisition needs.
  • Prepare project funding documents such as cost estimates, equipment bid summaries, and authorization requests.
  • Assist in engineering and field construction support services and troubleshoot with direct client interface in collaboration with the project team.
  • Support development of permit application packages for pipeline projects.
  • Prepare or review documents including proposals, technical reports, work plans, cost estimates, design/drawing packages, calculations, and other client correspondence.
  • Manage project delivery in accordance with company procedures and quality management plans.
  • Interact with clients and prepare for and participate in meetings, progress reports, proposals, and other correspondence to maintain responsive and positive client relationships.
Required Qualifications
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical, and organizational skills, positive attitude, ability to work independently and in teams with contractors and cross‑discipline in‑house designers.
  • Understanding of health & safety priority and enthusiasm to participate in WSP’s associated programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 5–7 years of pipeline design experience in consulting or pipeline operating company contexts.
  • Registration as Engineer in Training (EIT) minimum; Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • Knowledge of liquids and gas design codes and regulations including 49 CFR Part 192 and 195, ASME B31.4, ASME B31.8, AWWA M11, etc.
  • Familiarity with pipeline engineering software such as Pipeline Toolbox, AutoPIPE/CAESAR II, PipeFLO, and AFT Impulse.
  • Detail‑oriented, highly organized with solid time‑management abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and positive, team‑oriented attitude with client service understanding.
  • High level of personal integrity and strong work ethic.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% as required by projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience delivering projects as a consultant for clients with regional or national assets with substantial health and safety requirements.
  • Project management experience or certifications considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with business development and marketing of consulting services within the pipeline industry.
  • Knowledge of Pipeline Hazardous Materials and Safety Administration requirements.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 scheduling.
  • Problem‑solving skills with ability to identify alternative solutions.
  • Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Plant 3D, and/or CADWorks.
