GemTek Recruiting is partnering with an established technology company to identify a Senior Backend Software Engineer. The role focuses on maintaining and evolving a large PHP-based application while contributing Rust services and API integrations.

You will work on database performance, REST API design, and collaboration with frontend teams, with remote work aligned to East Coast business hours. This is a full-time position with travel flexibility as needed.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software development experience with full stack exposure.
• Advanced PHP development expertise and MVC frameworks experience.
• Strong MySQL/MariaDB skills including design, indexing, and performance optimization.
• Proven API design, development, documentation, and REST API integration experience.
• Knowledge of API authentication, authorization, HTTP methods, and standards.
• Experience with automated testing (unit/integration).
• Proficiency with Git, CI/CD, and deployment workflows; Unix/Linux proficiency.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, enhance, and expand a large production web application.
• Develop scalable PHP applications using MVC frameworks.
• Contribute to design and implementation of new Rust backend services.
• Optimize MySQL/MariaDB databases, queries, indexing, and transactions.
• Design, develop, document, and maintain REST APIs.
• Integrate third party systems including payment gateways.
