Job summary

FIRST GROUP AMERICA INC is seeking an experienced Payroll Tax Leader in Cincinnati, OH to oversee federal, state, and local payroll tax compliance. The role includes quarterly closes, W‑2 processes, policy development, and cross‑functional collaboration to ensure accuracy and timeliness across multi‑state operations.

Candidate must have 6+ years in payroll tax with multi‑state exposure, 5+ years in leadership, and Workday/SmartCompliance experience; a CPP or FPC is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related discipline plus 6+ years’ experience in the Payroll Tax field, or the equivalent of 10+ years’ experience in the Payroll Tax field.
• 6+ years’ experience with payroll taxes in at least 30+ states.
• 5+ years’ experience in payroll tax leadership.
• 5+ years’ Workday software experience.
• 5+ years’ experience working with third‑party payroll tax compliance tools such as SmartCompliance.
• Certification such as FPC or CPP.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills with an ability to communicate information clearly and effectively throughout all levels of the organization
• Demonstrated ability to work well with cross‑functional groups
• Demonstrated interpersonal, collaborative, and relationship‑building skills; ability to interact positively with teammates at all levels of the company

Responsibilities

• Oversight of tax compliance requirements, regulations, and confidentiality provisions for the payroll tax team
• Ensure all federal, state, and local payroll tax liabilities and filings are accurate and timely
• Oversight of quarterly tax close and annual W-2/W-2c process
• Develop and maintain payroll tax policies and procedures
• Manage relationships with third‑party payroll tax system providers
• Develop policies to ensure payroll tax compliance across multi‑state operations
• Maintain payroll data integrity and run audits
• Ensure regulatory compliance and prepare EEOC, BLS, and multi‑state reporting as required
• Stay current on laws at local, state, and federal levels
• Partner with Legal to address employee compliance
• Review and improve payroll and tax procedures for best‑practice operations
• Resolve accounting discrepancies related to payroll and payroll‑tax reporting
• Coach payroll tax team and promote cross‑training
• Ensure SOX and internal controls compliance
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and stakeholders
