Job summary

General Motors is seeking an on-site Paint Department Automation Engineer to lead controls, robotics, and plant-floor systems in the paint shop. You will support daily production, launches, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement, collaborating with operations, maintenance, quality, IT, and suppliers.

You will design and integrate automation solutions, maintain documentation, and ensure safety with GM standards. Travel to GM locations may be required during launches and commissioning.

Qualifications

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control-panel drawings, equipment specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex automation and equipment problems using data and structured problem-solving methods.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support for paint shop automation, including PLCs, HMIs, robots, drives, sensors, networks, and equipment interfaces.
  • Troubleshoot automation faults, controls issues, communication problems, alarms, and production interruptions.
  • Lead or support design, programming, integration, installation, commissioning, validation, and launch of paint equipment and systems.
  • Develop and maintain automation requirements, electrical drawings, software backups, and change records.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and contractors on controls design, factory testing, site installation, commissioning, and acceptance.
  • Support paint process systems such as pretreatment, ovens, booths, sealer, basecoat, conveyors, and environmental control systems.
  • Improve equipment availability, throughput, first-time quality, process stability, energy performance, and material utilization.
  • Apply structured problem-solving methods to identify root causes and corrective actions.
