Job summary

K2 Space in Los Angeles, CA is seeking a Senior Satellite Mechanical Engineer, Optical Structures to own cradle-to-grave mechanical and optomechanical design for space payloads from concept to flight. This role focuses on optical payloads, structural design, thermal analysis, and hardware realization for missions from LEO to deep space.

The position requires 4+ years in mechanical or optomechanical design, proficiency with 3D CAD and FEA, hands-on prototyping, and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of mechanical or optomechanical design and analysis experience.
• Proficiency with 3D CAD and detailed part/assembly design.
• Experience with finite element analysis for modal, stress, and thermo-structural analysis.
• Hands-on prototyping and testing experience.

Responsibilities

• Take satellite mechanical and optical hardware from conceptual design through analysis, prototyping, flight manufacturing, and qualification to on-orbit operations.
• Own mechanical, electronics thermal heatsinking, and lens mounting design for subsystems at the intersection of mechanical, optical, and electrical.
• Lead hardware trades and oversee subsystem and top-level product direction.
• Lead subsystem design reviews from kickoff through qualification and beyond.
• Drive hardware development with hands-on assembly, development testing, and iterations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish product requirements and best practices for hardware design and manufacturing.
• Refine sub-system deliverable schedules throughout development and production.
