Job summary

Observable Space seeks a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer, Photonics, to design and integrate precision opto-mechanical systems across ground-based and future space payloads. You will work with optical and electrical engineers to enable fiber-coupled subsystems, laser integration, and high-sensitivity imaging assemblies.

The role is hands-on, involving prototype assembly, alignment, and debugging in multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of optomechanical engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in mechanical design fundamentals and tolerancing.
• Experience with CAD tools and optical/photonic components.
• Familiarity with FEA for structural and thermal analysis.
• Hands-on fabrication, machining, and assembly experience.
• Ability to read technical drawings and collaborate across disciplines.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills in multidisciplinary systems.

Responsibilities

• Architect, design, and document optomechanical systems for ground and space applications.
• Design precision assemblies for fiber coupling, laser integration, and detectors.
• Lead opto-mechanical design, analysis and validation of Wavefront Sensors.
• Perform STOP analysis to ensure alignment under operational conditions.
• Conduct FEA to evaluate structural, thermal, and vibrational performance.
• Collaborate with optical/electrical/software engineers for integration and testing.
• Develop and simulate control systems for adaptive optics.
