Job summary

UCI Health, the clinical enterprise of the University of California, Irvine, seeks an Ophthalmic Assistant to perform front and back office ophthalmic tests and patient screening in a dynamic clinic setting.

You will triage calls, support scheduling, and help develop patient care plans under the guidance of the Manager and physicians. Strong COA, COT, and BLS credentials plus English proficiency are required.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels.
  • Previous experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA).
  • Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job.
  • Must be competent in collecting and interpreting data about the patient's status to identify age-specific needs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, infectious control techniques and age related acuity levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Current COT Certification.
  • Current BLS certification required by time of hire.
  • Capable of performing most ophthalmic tests and patient workups for diagnosis.
  • Able to evaluate and document patient/family response to care.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility in a changing environment.
  • Ability to maintain work pace.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships across the Health System.

Responsibilities

  • Triages patient and pharmacy calls and prescription refills; intervenes with physicians as appropriate.
  • Coordinates front and back office operations and scheduling with the Manager to maximize patient flow.
  • Assists in assessing training needs of staff.
  • Formulates patient plans of care and follow-up as appropriate.
  • Works independently within COT certification parameters.
  • Assists in orienting new technicians and helps new hires learn diagnostic testing skills.
