Job summary

Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital offers a nursing externship where you will provide bedside patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse in a hospital setting. You will follow infection control standards, support care plans, and contribute to a collaborative healthcare team.

Successful applicants have completed at least the junior year of nursing school, completed clinical rotations, and hold current BLS certification.

Qualifications

  • Must have completed at least junior year of nursing school and be ready to continue clinical rotations.
  • Clinical rotations completed in an accredited nursing program.
  • Meets Orlando Health/unit competency and performance requirements.
  • No professional nursing experience required to apply.
  • Maintains current BLS/Healthcare provider certification.
  • Exposure to acute care or hospital-based clinical environments preferred.
  • Must meet licensure eligibility and program requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Administers bedside patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Adheres to infection prevention, PPE use, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions.
  • Assesses patient needs and helps develop an individualized care plan.
  • Ensures inclusive, culturally sensitive care for patients and families.
  • Communicates patient needs and safety concerns to the RN promptly.
  • Demonstrates age-appropriate care for patients across units.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to support patient care.
  • Escalates changes in patient condition to the RN in a timely manner.
  • Performs duties within assigned unit/department under supervision.
  • Shows 4 C's: Connection, Curiosity, Communication, Commitment.
  • Expands knowledge during externship related to growth and development.
  • Documents patient care accurately in the EMR with RN co-signature.
  • Progressively assumes increased responsibility for a defined patient assignment.

Responsibilities
What you will do
  • Administers bedside patient care in a hospital or inpatient/observation setting under the supervision of an assigned Preceptor in a Registered Nurse role.
  • Adheres to infection prevention and control standards, including appropriate use of PPE, hand hygiene, and isolation precautions.
  • Collaborates with the assigned Registered Nurse, assesses patient's needs, and develops/revises an individualized plan of care based on patient’s needs and responses. Evaluates the patient's progress toward attaining expected outcomes.
  • Promotes an inclusive and culturally sensitive environment by respecting diverse backgrounds, identities, and perspectives of patients, families, and team members.
  • Communicates any patient and family advocacy issues with the assigned Registered Nurse.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care for patients served in their assigned unit/department.
  • Communicates and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team under the guidance of the assigned Registered Nurse.
  • Recognizes and escalates patient safety concerns, changes in condition, or urgent clinical needs to the Registered Nurse in a timely manner.
  • Functions effectively as a member of the care team, demonstrating understanding of roles, responsibilities, and appropriate delegation within scope for a defined group of patients.
  • Makes decisions and demonstrates behaviors associated with the 4 C's: Connection, Curiosity, Communication and Commitment.
  • Continues to expand knowledge during externship related to the principles of growth and development over the life span, assesses data reflective of the patient's status, and interprets the necessary information to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age- specific needs.
  • Documents patient care accurately and timely in the EMR under the supervision of and with the co-signature of a Registered Nurse. This includes, but is not limited to, patient assessment, education, medication administration, treatments, and ensuring patient safety.
  • Demonstrates expanded competency during externship in nursing skills and use of patient care/unit equipment as defined by unit/department-specific requisite skills.
  • Progressively assumes increased responsibility for a defined patient assignment under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
  • Demonstrates effective time management and prioritization skills in managing patient care continuously in accordance with Evidence- Based Practice Standards of care.
  • Practices effective problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Applies developing clinical judgment to recognize changes in patient condition and appropriately escalates concerns.
  • Demonstrates caring practices by providing a compassionate and therapeutic environment for patients and their families.
  • Contributes to a positive patient and family experience through service excellence, effective communication, and responsiveness.
  • Enhances knowledge/awareness of legal issues and patients' rights.
  • Actively seeks and incorporates feedback from preceptors and clinical teams to support ongoing professional growth and skill development.
  • Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
  • Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Follows the schedule of the assigned preceptor.
  • Attends assigned summer extern team meetings.
Qualifications
  • Completed junior year of nursing school or equivalent by the start of the program.
  • Successful completion of clinical rotations in an accredited nursing program.
  • Meets all mandatory, developmental, and performance competency requirements for Orlando Health and the specific unit/department.
  • None No professional nursing experience required.
  • Prior direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting (e.g., CNA, PCT, MA, EMT, or similar role) preferred.
  • Exposure to acute care or hospital-based clinical environments preferred.
  • Maintains current BLS/Healthcare provider certification.
