Senior NPI Manufacturing Engineer – Control Electronics

Bothell, Washington, United States

About IonQ

IonQ, Inc. (NYSE: IONQ) is the world’s leading quantum platform and merchant supplier delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. IonQ’s newest generation of quantum computers, including the IonQ Tempo, has achieved 99.99% two‑qubit gate fidelity and is setting a world record in quantum computing performance.

Headquartered in College Park, Maryland, IonQ has operations in multiple U.S. states and international locations. The company’s cloud services are available through all major cloud providers and it serves customers in various industries.

Location

This role will work onsite at the Bothell, WA office.

The Role

We are looking for a Senior NPI Manufacturing Engineer – Control Electronics to join our Manufacturing Engineering team. As a Senior NPI Manufacturing Engineer, you will own the new product introduction and DFMA process for IonQ’s control electronics subsystem. You will bridge early prototype build activity at IonQ’s College Park, MD facility to production‑ready processes at the Bothell manufacturing facility, and lead the stand‑up of IonQ’s controls rack integration capability in Seattle.

Responsibilities
  • Embed early in design reviews for PCBA and box‑level control electronics assemblies, and drive incorporation of DFMA feedback by collaborating cross‑functionally with electrical and mechanical engineers on schematics, layout constraints, stack‑up, component selection, and packaging.
  • Review and redline PCBA designs with an EE lens—signal integrity, thermal management, layer stack‑up, via rules, component spacing, and manufacturability at target volumes.
  • Assess box‑level enclosure and chassis designs for assembly access, harness routing, connector placement, labeling, and rack integration compatibility.
  • Maintain DFMA feedback documentation and track incorporation through design revision cycles per box build.
  • Drive completeness of Technical Data Packages for all control electronics box builds: BOM release status, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, test procedures, and work instructions before NPI and production gates.
  • Collaborate with design engineering to ensure design releases are complete and structured correctly for manufacturing and supply chain execution.
  • Author and peer‑review assembly instructions and manufacturing SOPs executable by technicians without engineering support.
  • Lead the cross‑site NPI transition for control electronics box builds from alpha/beta prototyping to production, including first‑article builds, process qualification, and production readiness verification.
  • Travel across sites to participate in early prototype box build assemblies, capture build observations, redlines, and process learnings to inform production process development.
  • Coordinate with Planning, SCM, and Production Support Engineering to align demand, material, and capacity at NPI gate transitions.
  • Work hands‑on with technicians and engineers during builds, focusing on PCBA assembly, box build integration, and electromechanical hardware.
  • Lead process development for fully populated controls rack integration; develop process flows, assembly sequences, quality checkpoints, and work instructions for rack‑level builds.
  • Partner with electrical and systems engineers to define rack integration requirements, inter‑chassis cabling standards, harness routing, and system‑level interface verification.
  • Apply electromechanical assembly expertise to the physical integration of control boxes, power distribution, chassis mounting, and cable management within racks.
  • Provide feedback on testability gaps relative to manufacturing process risk; suggest incremental improvements to existing diagnostic tooling where appropriate.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of professional experience in manufacturing engineering or NPI engineering, primarily electronics hardware (PCBA and box builds) in a low‑volume, high‑mix development environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in technical writing developing comprehensive assembly instructions and other manufacturing documentation for production use.
  • Hands‑on experience reviewing PCBA designs for manufacturability: comfortable reading schematics, reviewing layouts, and providing specific DFMA feedback to EE designers.
  • Direct experience with PCBA manufacturing processes: SMT, reflow, wave solder, hand solder, and relevant quality standards (IPC‑A‑610, J‑STD‑001).
  • Electromechanical assembly experience: box builds, chassis integration, cable harnessing, and connector installation.
  • Experience driving Technical Data Package completeness for electronics assemblies: BOM structure, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, and work instructions from prototype through production release.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead NPI handoffs across distributed teams from prototype site to production facility.
  • Strong technical project‑management skills: maintaining visibility across multiple concurrent NPI tracks, proactively flagging risks, and driving resolution with cross‑functional stakeholders.
  • Experience with PLM/ERP systems (Duro, NetSuite, Arena, or similar) for BOM management and change control.
  • Ability to work onsite the majority of the time.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with rack‑level electromechanical integration—populating and cabling 19” rack enclosures with custom electronics, including power distribution and inter‑chassis interface design.
  • Familiarity with RF electronics, DAC/ADC‑based control systems, or precision analog electronics in a manufacturing or test context.
  • System‑level understanding of control electronics architecture—how PCBA‑level assemblies integrate into a multi‑chassis control subsystem.
  • Experience with interface design and connector DFMA—I/O panel layout, signal segregation, and panel‑level assembly optimization.
  • Experience with scripting (Python or similar) for basic test automation or incremental diagnostic tooling modifications.
  • Experience transforming R&D prototypes into reproducible, CM‑ready products.
Compensation & Benefits

Approximate base salary range: $131,962 – $172,773. Compensation also includes bonus, equity, and a range of benefit options.

Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, matching 401(k), unlimited paid time off and paid holidays, parental/adoption leave, legal insurance, and a home technology stipend.
