Job summary

DigitalOcean is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to join the infrastructure team. You will design, implement, and maintain large-scale cloud and Internet backbone networks supporting hundreds of thousands of customers on our global platform.

You will diagnose issues, develop automation in Python/Go, design scalable solutions with BGP/IS-IS/MPLS, and lead incident response while mentoring teammates. This role emphasizes high availability, capacity planning, and cross‑functional collaboration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
• Demonstrated expertise with Linux.
• Proficiency in Go or Python.
• Hands-on experience with Juniper hardware (MX, QFX, EX, SRX) and Junos OS.
• Experience with large-scale datacenter and global backbone network design, troubleshooting, and operations.
• Knowledge of Layer 2/3 protocols including BGP, OSPF, VRRP, IS-IS, LACP, MC-LAG.
• Experience with MPLS including BGP-LU.
• Proficiency with Git and multi-branch development workflows.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose complex network issues using packet analysis, flow data, and monitoring tools; perform root cause analysis and implement permanent fixes to maintain SLA compliance and high availability.
• Develop automation scripts and workflows using Python, Golang, and Salt to automate provisioning, configuration changes, and compliance auditing across network infrastructure.
• Design and implement scalable network solutions for data center and cloud connectivity using BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, VxLAN, and Segment Routing protocols.
• Conduct capacity planning by analyzing traffic patterns, forecasting growth, and implementing QoS policies and routing optimizations to ensure customer performance.
• Provide technical guidance to team members, conduct design and architecture reviews, and create comprehensive network documentation including topology diagrams and runbooks.
• Research emerging networking solutions, conduct proof‑of‑concept deployments, and make technology adoption recommendations to leadership.
• Plan maintenance windows, draft change requests with rollback procedures, and lead cross‑functional communication during upgrades and migrations.
• Serve as senior escalation point for mission‑critical network incidents, coordinate with CloudOps during outages, and drive post‑incident improvement initiatives.
