Job summary

Brown County in Wisconsin is seeking an experienced accountant to manage medium to complex accounting functions for the Landfill, Resource Recovery, and Port programs. You will prepare periodic financial reports, assist with annual budgets, and ensure internal controls and compliance with accounting standards.

You will collaborate with the Finance Director and department managers to analyze variances, close monthly and year-end books, and support financial system improvements and audits.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and ability to apply them to a variety of work situations.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
• Ability to perform cost/benefit analyses and analyze data
• Proficiency with computer software including Microsoft Office and specialized County financial software
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and maintain accurate records

Responsibilities

• Oversee accounts receivable and payable for the Landfill.
• Oversees contracts for the Landfill, Port, and Resource Recovery.
• Participates in review and documentation of accounting systems and internal controls.
• Assist in the preparation of the Annual Budget and compilation of departmental data.
• Prepare monthly and annual financial reports and variance analyses.
• Reconcile cash and investment statements and close monthly/ year-end books.
• Support financial system implementations and provide user training as needed.
• Attend County Board meetings and committee meetings as requested.
• Ensure compliance with regulations and internal controls and report material weaknesses.
• Serve as back-up to accounting staff and assist with monthly billing and scale functions.
