Job summary

Partners 1st Federal Credit Union is seeking a mortgage underwriter to review and decide loan files at our Fort Wayne, IN location. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate underwriting conditions clearly with originators and staff.

You will assess borrower credit, income, assets, and property, review appraisals and title commitments, and ensure adherence to underwriting standards and investor guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Five+ years of mortgage underwriting or related experience.
  • Knowledge of FHLMC/FHLB underwriting guidelines is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities.

Responsibilities

This position is for U if you are an excellent problem solver with a knack for making the tough decisions and communicating them tactfully, detail-oriented and highly organized with a strong understanding of mortgage products and the mortgage industry and are able to work at our Directors Row location, Fort Wayne, IN, full-time, 40hrs/wk, with a schedule of:

Mon-Fri: 8:00am-5:00pm

There can be some flexibility with the schedule, as far as daily schedule, if needed.

Role

Reviews, evaluates, and then accepts/denies mortgage loan files using the internal Underwriting Standards, as well as general FHLMC and FHLB (Federal Home Loan Bank) underwriting guidelines, to determine creditworthiness of the applicant.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • 40% Receives and reviews loan files for sufficient documentation to make an informed loan decision based on the product description and standard underwriting guidelines. If there is insufficient information, requests the required information or documentation from the processor and originator. Complete a thorough analysis of the loan package to determine compliance with company and/or investor requirements.
  • 10% Communicates effectively with loan originators, processors, and closing staff to deliver clear underwriting conditions and final loan decisions.
  • 10% Provides effective and timely communication with management on high-risk loan scenarios or exception requests. Prepares and signs all conditional and final approval letters.
  • 10% Analyze borrower credit, income, assets, property, any potential risk factors, etc. to determine loan quality and repayment ability.
  • 10% Reviews appraisals to determine the consistency of the information, if the comparables have been used within reasonable tolerance to support the final value, and if any additional underwriting considerations need to be made based on the condition of the property or of other conditions recommended/required by the appraiser.
  • 10% Reviews title insurance commitments in connection with each new loan file. If the loan is denied, submits the loan file to appropriate party for a dual review.
  • 10% Serves as a trusteed resource to the mortgage team by providing guidance on loan scenarios, documentation in the file if a policy, procedure, or guideline exception is made stating the type of exception and compensating factors to support the decision.
  • Must comply with all company policies and procedures, applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.

Knowledge and Skills
Experience

Five or more years of similar or related experience, including time spent in preparatory positions.

Education/Certifications/Licenses

A high school degree or GED is required.

Other Skills

Is responsible for a width of information including but not limited to: the organizations current mortgage loan interest rates, commitment/rate lock/relock fee procedures, member loan products/rates/guidelines that are used in conjunction with Mortgage Lending, any loan origination software system.

Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.

Mental and/or Emotional Requirements

Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines / requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
