Job summary

Enigma is hiring a Senior/Staff Machine Learning Engineer to join the Match Team and scale customer-facing data products. You’ll lead research-to-production in ranking, retrieval, and semantic search, delivering low-latency experiences at scale.

You will collaborate with Product and Engineering, mentor teammates, and shape tooling and systems for high-impact data delivery. 5+ years of relevant experience and strong Python/AWS skills are required.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience across machine learning, software engineering, data science, or data-intensive product systems.
• Strong programming in Python and experience operating in cloud environments (AWS preferred).
• Demonstrated production-level expertise in two or more of information retrieval, ranking, NLP/embedding models, or distributed systems.
• Experience designing, fine-tuning, and operating high-scale backend systems, APIs, or data delivery platforms.
• Excellent judgment in ambiguous environments with noisy or implicit signals.

Responsibilities

• Develop innovative solutions to complex information retrieval, ranking, and semantic search problems.
• Build and optimize low-latency, high-throughput search APIs, indexing pipelines, and retrieval systems using Python, Typesense, and AWS.
• Evaluate and evolve our search stack; guide indexing strategies, retrieval architecture, and performance tradeoffs.
• Lead end-to-end work from research design through experimentation, productionization, and customer delivery.
• Design evaluation frameworks for measuring relevance, precision/recall, and user signals.
• Improve query understanding via embeddings, vector search, hybrid retrieval, and query rewriting.
• Detect anomalies in search performance and trace issues to root cause.
• Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and clients to improve search experience.
• Mentor teammates and raise the bar for experimentation and system design.
