Job summary

McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. is seeking a Senior MEP Estimator to lead estimating and trade partner procurement for vertical MEP projects.

This role focuses on design-assist decisions, accurate quantity take-offs, and comprehensive bid development, located near an McCarthy office area. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years in estimating and preconstruction for MEP trades, with strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems and related tools.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management, and/or minimum 5 years’ experience with estimating, design management and/or field management.
  • Experience in Mechanical (HVAC/Plumbing) and/or Electrical Preconstruction with an MEP Contractor or General Contractor; cross-trades preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction principles and practices is required.
  • Proven experience estimating mechanical systems and complex electrical/low voltage systems.
  • Experience with MS Excel, On-Screen Take-Off, Bluebeam Studio, Accubid, Revizto and WinEst is preferred.
  • Experience dealing with subcontracts, subcontractors and/or self-perform work.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building abilities; able to influence internal and external partners.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, maintain status of and review bid documents, submitting bids and estimates in a timely manner.
  • Prepare complete, accurate quantity take-offs to build estimates.
  • Assist with execution plans and win strategies.
  • Prepare thorough, detailed and well-annotated estimates.
  • Prepare comprehensive proposals, including bid forms and supporting documentation.
  • Subcontractor and vendor solicitation and management during preconstruction.
  • Participate in peer bid review and contract review for compliance with bid proposal.
  • Follow up with prior bid projects weekly and provide status updates at estimating meetings.
  • Assist project managers with questions about the estimate during the project lifecycle.
  • Cultivate client relationships and support Business Development in pursuing opportunities.
  • Participate in design meetings and provide Design-Assist or Design Build input.

Position Summary

The Senior MEP Estimator has the primary responsibility of estimating, design/decision assisting, and trade partner procurement for vertical projects for MEP trade packages.

This position is located in a geographic area where McCarthy has an office. A candidate who does not live in an area with a McCarthy office will need to relocate. If relocation is required, McCarthy offers a generous relocation package.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare, maintain status of and review bid documents, submitting bids and estimates in a timely manner
  • Prepare complete, accurate quantity take-offs to build estimates
  • Assist with execution plans and win strategies
  • Prepare a thorough, detailed and well-annotated estimate
  • Prepare a thorough, comprehensive proposal, including bid forms and supporting documentation
  • Subcontractor & Vendor solicitation and management during preconstruction process
  • Participate in peer bid review and contract review for compliance with bid proposal
  • Follow-up with prior bid projects on a weekly basis and update status at weekly estimating meeting
  • Assist project manager if questions arise throughout the project about the estimate
  • Cultivate existing client relationships and work with Business Development in building new relationships and targeting opportunities
  • Participate in design meetings, OAC meetings and provide Design-Assist or Design Build input.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture or Construction Management, and/or minimum 5 years’ experience with estimating, design management and/or field management.
  • Experience in a Mechanical (HVAC/Plumbing) and/or Electrical Preconstruction capacity with a MEP Contractor or General Contractor. Preference is experience across all MEP trades.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction principles/practices required
  • Proven experience estimating mechanical (including plumbing/process) systems and complex electrical and low voltage systems.
  • Experience working with MS Excel, On-Screen Take-Off, Bluebeam Studio, Accubid, Revizto, WinEst preferred
  • Experience dealing with subcontracts, subcontractors and/or self-perform work
  • Self-starter, highly motivated with the ability to build trust and influence others
  • Demonstrate behaviors consistent with McCarthy core values while maintaining a \"value added\" approach to preconstruction
  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate with varied audiences
  • Ability to perform mechanical quantity take-off based on OPRs, BODs, SLDs, architectural floor plans (sometimes without mechanical drawings)
  • Understand main differentiators among various mechanical and electrical systems and solutions
