Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • Hands-on experience from prototype to production in mechanical subsystems.
  • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (SolidWorks, ANSYS preferred).
  • Experience in a regulated industry (medical, aerospace, automotive).

  • Conceptualizes new devices using material knowledge and mechanical design.

The Opportunity:

This position works out of our Plano, TX location in the Neuromodulation Division. Our Neuromodulation business includes implantable devices compatible with mobile technology to help people who suffer from chronic pain and movement disorders. These non-opioid therapies allow us to provide interventional pain therapy to patients throughout the pain continuum. It sounds like science fiction: sending small electrical pulses to the spine to block pain signals or to the brain to suppress tremor.

What You’ll Work On:
  • Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical and electro‑mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment for implantable neurostimulation devices
  • Conceptualizes new devices using material knowledge and innovative mechanical design
  • Develops new concepts from initial design to market release with cross‑functional partners
  • Creates and submits novel design solutions that expand the intellectual property of the business
  • Conducts feasibility studies to verify capability and functionality
  • Balances design for reliability, manufacturing, and cost efficiency
  • Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development
  • Prepares technical reports, analyses, recommendations, and presentations reflecting the status and results of projects in progress
  • Participates/contributes to technical reviews of mechanical designs
  • Reviews and coordinates vendor activities to support development and validation of device components
  • Establishes and cultivates an extensive network of support to facilitate completion of assignments
  • Exhibits and instills decision‑making based in objective engineering principles (analytical and empirical)
  • Develops test methods, models, fixtures, and tools to evaluate designs
  • Multi‑tasks, prioritizes, and meets deadlines in a timely manner
  • Identifies, communicates, and mitigates project risks
  • Builds and maintains positive and cooperative relationships internally and externally
  • Ensures compliance to all applicable internal requirements and external regulations
  • Position may require up to 10% travel
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • 5+ years of relevant development or R&D experience (preferably with implantable leads or catheters)
  • Hands‑on experience taking mechanical subsystems from prototype through design verification and into production
  • Experience with CAD and FEA modeling software (SolidWorks, ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience in developing fabricated parts and assemblies – from rapid prototyping to production (CNC machining, injection molding, thermoforming, extrusion, sheet metal, etc.)
  • Product development experience within a regulated industry (e.g. medical, aerospace, automotive, etc.)
  • Experience working with cross‑functional teams and taking initiative to ensure successful outcomes
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • Demonstrated hands‑on experience designing for manufacturing processes used in implantable leads or catheters (e.g. biocompatible material selection, extrusion, coiling, braiding, welding, molding, lamination, bonding, etc.)
  • Familiarity with typical lead and catheter materials such as polyurethanes, silicones, and high‑strength conductor alloys like MP35N and 35NLT
  • Lead design and development experience (neuromodulation, cardiac, cochlear, or other relevant application)
  • Strong history of cross‑functional collaboration with other engineering disciplines (Clinical, Electrical, Manufacturing)
  • Experience with statistical techniques (e.g. DOE, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, etc.)
  • Knowledge of design controls and regulations for medical device development
