Job summary

MDU Construction Services Group, Inc. seeks an experienced Mechanical Estimator to prepare detailed cost estimates for HVAC, piping, and process systems based on drawings and RFIs.

You will collaborate with project teams, attend pre-bid conferences, and ensure bids align with client requirements and scope. Strong knowledge of NC codes and multi-project management is essential.

Qualifications

• 5–7+ years of mechanical estimating for industrial, pharmaceutical, and heavy commercial MEP projects.
• High school diploma or GED.

Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for HVAC, piping, plumbing, and process piping based on drawings and RFIs.
• Attend pre-bid conferences as necessary.
• Coordinate with Estimating Manager to pursue opportunities that fit needs and resources.
• Develop comprehensive bid proposals aligned with client requirements and project scope.
• Analyze material takeoffs, labor requirements, and equipment costs for cost-effective solutions.
• Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers and subcontractors for price and quality.
• Work with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders to refine estimates and address challenges.
• Identify risks and opportunities to mitigate cost overruns.
• Work in Trimble & Quote Express estimating software to streamline processes and maintain records.
• Stay informed on industry trends, costs, and labor rates to reflect market conditions.
• Maintain organized records of estimates and supporting docs for audits.
• Coordinate estimates with SE&M Electrical & Service Departments for combined pursuits.
• Lead estimate turnover meetings for smooth transitions to operations team.
• Perform material buyouts and submittal prep for awarded projects when needed.
• Other tasks as assigned.

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for mechanical systems, including HVAC, mechanical piping, plumbing, and process piping based on project drawings, specifications, and other request for proposal information provided by customers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Minimum of 5-7+ years of experience in mechanical estimating for industrial, pharmaceutical, and heavy commercial MEP projects
• High school diploma or GED

KEY SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications
• Proficiency in Trimble & Quote Soft estimating software(s)
• Strong understanding of NC Mechanical & Plumbing Codes and industry standards
• Strong understanding of mechanical and plumbing systems, materials, and industrial standards
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present estimates and collaborate with teams
• Detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple estimating projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinate with the Estimating Manager to ensure we are pursuing the correct opportunities that fit with our current needs, future needs, and resource scheduling
• Develop comprehensive bid proposals, ensuring alignment with client requirements and project scope.
• Analyze material takeoffs, labor requirements, and equipment costs to ensure cost-effective solutions.
• Solicit and evaluate quotes from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing and quality.
• Work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to refine estimates and address project-specific challenges.
• Identify potential risks and opportunities in project estimates and provide recommendations to mitigate cost overruns.
• Work in Trimble & Quote Express estimating software to streamline the estimating process and maintain accurate records.
• Stay informed on industry trends, material costs, and labor rates to ensure estimates reflect current market conditions.
• Maintain organized records of estimates, assumptions, and supporting documentation for future reference and audits.
• Work closely with SE&M Electrical & Service Departments to coordinate estimates on combined pursuits
• Lead estimate turnover meetings to ensure a smooth transition to the assigned operations project team.
• Perform material buyouts and submittal preparation of awarded projects, when needed
• Other tasks as assigned
