Job summary

Carbon in Sunnyvale is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for the Continuous Improvement team to design, build, and sustain additive manufacturing solutions from new printers to new part-cleaning methods. You will collaborate with Industrial Design, Electrical, Software and Operations to deliver tested designs, supplier engagement, and documentation, while driving schedules and cost targets.

This role requires a BS in Mechanical Engineering, 3+ years in production-ready design, on-site work five days

Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree.
  • 3+ years experience taking mechanical designs from concept to production.
  • Engineering analysis including tolerance, safety, thermal, stress, fatigue, lifetime, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
  • Understanding of quality metrics and methods: GD&T, DFMEA, and SPC.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to define requirements and troubleshoot.
  • Experience with material selection for sheet metal, metal, plastic, and elastomers.
  • Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication, plastic injection molding, casting, and CNC machining.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to present and defend design decisions.

  • Own design, architecture and testing of complex parts and subassemblies and drive changes through production.
  • Perform engineering analysis of parts and assemblies including tolerance, safety, thermal, stress and cost.
  • Collaborate with Industrial Design, Electrical, Optical and Software teams to create requirements and troubleshoot.
  • Coordinate with Operations to support released products, ensure production, and troubleshoot in assembly/field.
  • Create and maintain clear engineering specifications and documentation for knowledge transfer.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing to ensure quality and performance.

About the Role...

As a mechanical engineer on the Continuous Improvement team, you will help us design, build, and sustain groundbreaking additive manufacturing solutions ranging from new printers to new ways to clean parts.

The Continuous Improvement team has a wide variety of responsibilities, including leading new product introduction (NPI) with Manufacturing, developing new product variations, designing new features for current products, and adapting current products for long-term production in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

As a member of a tight-knit and cross-functional hardware team, you'd contribute ideas and develop practical solutions to an evolving list of never before seen challenges. Your work will help ensure that we deliver great products and delight our customers while changing the world of additive manufacturing.

Note: This role is based in our Sunnyvale office and requires 5 days in office. Some travel will be necessary to our Santa Clara manufacturing facility.

You will...
  • Own design, architecture and testing of complex parts and subassemblies and drive changes through Production.

  • Collaborate directly with Industrial Design, Electrical, Optical, Software, and other engineering teams to create engineering requirements, implement designs, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Collaborate with Operations, such as, Sourcing, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, Production, and Field Service to support released products, ensure continued production, and troubleshoot issues seen during assembly and in the field.
  • Create and maintain clear engineering specifications and documentation to support effective knowledge transfer throughout the company.
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing throughout development to ensure quality and performance.

Required
  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree.
  • 3+ years experience successfully taking mechanical designs from concept to production.
  • Strong ability to perform engineering analysis of parts and assemblies that can include: detailed tolerance, safety, thermal, stress, fatigue, lifetime, manufacturability, failure modes, and cost.
  • Understand product quality metrics and methods including GD&T, DFMEA, and Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • Experience collaborating directly with cross functional engineering teams to create engineering requirements, implement designs, and troubleshoot issues.
  • Experience with material selection in sheet metal, metal, plastic, and elastomers.
  • Strong familiarity with sheet metal fabrication methods, plastic injection molding, casting, and CNC machining.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to present and defend design decisions to leadership.
  • Experience driving designs to schedules and providing schedule input to project managers.
Nice to Have
  • Experience in a production environment / comfort working with technicians on the manufacturing floor as well as in the lab.

The compensation bracket for this position is $137,600.00 - $206,400.00 (per year). In order to maintain equitable internal pay practices, we aim to hire new employees near the midpoint of $172,000.00 , taking into account your experience, work location, certifications, and the unique skills you bring to the role.
