Job summary

BR+A Consulting Engineers is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for our New Haven, CT or Boston, MA offices. The candidate will take ownership of technically challenging HVAC design on healthcare, higher education, and laboratory projects, leading multi-disciplinary teams through SD, DD, and CD phases.

Responsibilities include coordinating with vendors, performing advanced load calculations, developing equipment room sizes, and ensuring documentation aligns with project scope.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
• PE License is required.
• 10–20 years of relevant design experience in healthcare, higher education, or laboratory sectors.

Responsibilities

• Deliver high-quality HVAC design and deliverables on complex projects.
• Manage projects, write proposals, and maintain client relationships.
• Perform heating and cooling load calculations using Trace or HAP.
• Develop ductwork and piping layouts during SD/DD/CD phases.
• Edit specifications to reflect project requirements and equipment choices.
• Coordinate with discipline leads (MEPFP, architecture, structures).
• Respond to RFIs and review submittals accurately.
• Support field verification and take-offs for renovation projects.

BR+A is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer in our New Haven, CT or Boston, MA office. The candidate must be strongly motivated, well organized, and show professional initiative. The ability to take ownership of assignments and perform well both independently and as part of the project team is necessary.

Responsibilities

• Delivering high-quality designs and deliverables on technically challenging projects
• Managing projects, writing proposals, maintaining positive client relationships
• Performing advanced heating and cooling load calculations with Trace or HAP
• Developing sections and elevations of complex ductwork and piping areas
• Developing equipment room sizes during SD and DD phases
• Editing specifications to reflect the project requirements
• Developing air and water flows
• Understanding fan and pump curves to properly select equipment for application
• Using the psychrometric chart properly for any HVAC system
• Meeting with vendors to determine specification requirements for application
• Coordinating with other disciplines (mepfp, arch, struct, etc) for all HVAC details
• Responding to RFI’s for the project and accurately review submittals
• Understanding work planning and managing the design process to the available hours in the work plan
• Understanding the proper scope of SD, DD, CD level documents and delivering appropriate documentation
• Modifying sequences of operations for AHU’s, CHW, and HW systems
• Understanding both constant and variable flow systems, and properly applying equipment
• Meeting with contractors during the bid phase to review the design details
• Performing field verification and take-offs of existing systems for renovation projects
