With 20+ years of experience bringing automation to nuclear projects, ATS Industrial Automation is expanding the capabilities of its existing nuclear division into the US. ATS provides world‑leading automation tooling to the nuclear energy sector for new reactor builds, refurbishment, operations and maintenance.

About the Role

As a Senior Mechanical Designer Engineer you will guide the formation of a new Nuclear team at ATS Industrial Automation, USA. You will establish local design expertise, work with others to drive and establish a nuclear QA program, collaborate with global ATS nuclear teams, and develop innovative solutions for complex nuclear and industrial automation projects. You will lead mechanical design efforts, organize project documentation, and problem‑solve during debug and completion of systems.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Design and support the development of automated equipment for industrial and nuclear projects.
  • Perform engineering calculations for strength of materials, speeds, horsepower, temperature, pressure, force, etc. as related to machine and tool designs.
  • Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to determine shape, dimensions, hardness, etc. for developing equipment, processes, and products.
  • Define tools, fixtures, and equipment to be used in fabrication and assembly of mechanical components and complete assemblies.
  • Produce working drawings, detail drawings, and bills of materials for equipment, sub‑assemblies, or products, using AutoCAD and SOLIDWORKS.
  • Specify appropriate purchase components for mechanical assemblies and create requisitions with appropriate delivery dates.
  • Analyze designs and systems for compliance with applicable standards (OSHA, CE, or customer‑specific).
  • Strictly follow ASME NQA‑1 quality requirements as defined within the manuals and procedures.
  • Work cross‑functionally with other teams.
  • Review electrical requirements with respect to input and output devices with electrical designers.
  • Review machine operations and machine sequences with programmers.
  • Assist fabricators, machinists, toolmakers, and electricians in debugging, integration, resolving problems, and completing systems.
  • Communicate design changes to the Mechanical Engineering Group Lead or Project Engineer.
  • Assist with the Group Leader’s responsibilities during their absence.
  • Provide subject‑matter expert oversight and opinion to support ATS business in key focus areas for nuclear (BWRs, PWRs, SMRs).
  • Provide technical direction, advice, and guidance to the engineering/departments.
  • Support nuclear projects by participating in design reviews and providing solutions to complex problems.
  • Support internal and customer‑driven innovations by participating in engineering, conceptual design, development, and testing.
  • Provide engineering support related to construction of nuclear projects per all applicable nuclear equipment standards.
  • Support Applications Engineering to prepare concepts for new nuclear proposals.
  • Prepare concept designs and assemble preliminary pricing for critical proposals.
  • Participate and lead the development of innovative programs to meet nuclear industry demand.
  • Ensure proper interpretation of industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure design and engineering procedures and standard practices comply with industry‑specific regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure that quality objectives are met by translating them into policies and protocols. Define the framework for the engineering team which instills excellence in quality by design.
  • Provide engineering support in the development of a nuclear quality assurance process for ATS Quality Department to handle nuclear projects.
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Science or Technology. A Professional Engineer license would be an asset.

Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering design, development and qualification of automated systems, custom machinery or industrial equipment.
  • 5+ years of experience in nuclear tooling development and testing, preferably including field support and experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of and use of nuclear equipment quality standards (NQA‑1, ASME BPV Section III).
  • Thorough understanding of machine design and build, machine controls, structured problem solving, statistical analysis, and precision engineering principles.
  • Good written and oral communication skills and ability to lead or work as part of a multidisciplinary project team.

  • Work in conformance with divisional health, safety and environmental procedures and comply with legislative requirements.
  • Refrain from removing or altering safety devices or guarding unless hazardous energies are controlled through lockout‑tagout methods.
  • Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts, defects in any equipment or protective device, and any accidents/incidents to the supervisor.
  • Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for assigned tasks.
  • Attend all required health, safety and environmental training.
  • Assist in investigating accidents/incidents where applicable.
