Overview

TRS Staffing Solutions is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support refinery, petrochemical, and industrial capital projects in the Pacific Northwest.

This is an opportunity for a seasoned mechanical engineer to take a leadership role in project execution, technical oversight, and multidisciplinary coordination. The successful candidate will provide expertise in process piping, fixed equipment, and mechanical systems while leading engineering efforts from scope development through construction support.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience supporting refinery or industrial facilities, a strong understanding of applicable mechanical codes and standards, and a proven ability to lead projects and mentor engineering teams in a fast-paced EPC environment.

Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Engineering & Design
  • Lead mechanical engineering activities for refinery and industrial projects.

  • Provide technical leadership for process piping, fixed equipment, and mechanical systems.

  • Perform and review engineering calculations, analyses, and design documentation.

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry codes and standards including:

  • ASME B31.1 and B31.3

  • ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code

  • API Standards

  • NBIC requirements

  • Prepare and review:

  • Equipment sizing calculations

  • Equipment data sheets

  • Equipment descriptions

  • Technical reports

  • Mechanical specifications

Piping & Equipment Engineering
  • Support the design, modification, and maintenance of process piping systems.

  • Review piping layouts, isometrics, support details, and equipment arrangements.

  • Evaluate materials of construction, coatings, insulation systems, welding procedures, and testing requirements.

  • Provide technical guidance related to pressure vessels, tanks, separators, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, and associated systems.

Project Leadership
  • Lead mechanical engineering deliverables from concept through execution.

  • Develop scopes of work, budgets, schedules, and execution strategies.

  • Identify technical risks and opportunities for value improvement.

  • Coordinate engineering activities with project managers and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Review engineering deliverables for technical accuracy, constructability, and quality.

Construction & Field Support
  • Support field walkdowns, construction activities, and installation reviews.

  • Respond to RFIs and provide technical support during construction.

  • Participate in design reviews, model reviews, and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs).

  • Assist with project commissioning and startup support as required.

Mentoring & Collaboration
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers.

  • Coordinate with clients, vendors, designers, construction teams, and project stakeholders.

  • Foster collaborative relationships across engineering disciplines.

  • Support continuous learning and professional development within the team.

Safety & Quality
  • Promote a strong safety culture and commitment to zero incidents.

  • Ensure compliance with company, client, and industry safety requirements.

  • Deliver high-quality work while maintaining schedule and budget commitments.

Required Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience
  • Minimum 10+ years of Mechanical Engineering experience.

  • Experience supporting:

  • Refineries

  • Petrochemical facilities

  • Oil & Gas facilities

  • Heavy industrial plants

  • Process manufacturing environments

  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering deliverables and providing technical direction.

Technical Skills

Strong experience with:

  • Process piping systems

  • Fixed equipment design and evaluation

  • Mechanical equipment specifications

  • Piping design and constructability reviews

  • Equipment procurement packages

  • Vendor drawing and document reviews

  • Mechanical construction support

Knowledge of:

  • ASME B31.1

  • ASME B31.3

  • ASME BPVC Section I & VIII

  • API Standards

  • NBIC requirements

Ability to:

  • Develop engineering scopes and estimates

  • Review and approve technical documentation

  • Manage competing priorities and project schedules

  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues

  • EIT certification.

  • Significant refinery experience.

  • Previous experience serving as a discipline lead.

  • Experience mentoring and supervising engineering staff.

  • Experience supporting brownfield facility upgrades and capital projects.

  • EPC/EPCM project experience strongly preferred.

Work Schedule
  • Hybrid schedule based in Ferndale, WA.

  • Tuesday through Thursday onsite.

  • Monday and Friday remote.

  • Flexible work environment with strong collaboration across engineering disciplines.

Travel Requirements
  • Local travel to project and industrial facility locations approximately one day per week.

  • Participation in meetings, site walkdowns, and project reviews.

  • Less than 10% overnight travel.

Additional Requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC Card.

  • Ability to obtain required site‑specific safety certifications and badges.

  • HHFT Safety Training certification or ability to obtain.

  • Successful completion of background screening.

  • Participation in federally mandated drug and alcohol testing programs.

  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
