Job Summary
  • Applies multidisciplinary engineering skills, compliance, knowledge, and project management experience to design engineering research studies. Determines the appropriate analysis methods, identifies problems, and develops and implements solutions to complex problems. Directing part vendors and providing specifications.
  • Designs, analyzes, tests, manufactures, and maintains mechanical components and systems, tests equipment.
  • Applies principles of engineering, physics, and materials science as well as an understanding of core areas including mechanics, kinematics, dynamics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, chemistry, life sciences and electricity along with tools like computer‑aided design and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment, and machinery; heating and cooling systems; transport systems; aircraft; watercraft; robotics; medical devices; weapons; and others.
  • Researches, plans, designs, and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal hydraulic, or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
  • Designs, develops, and implements numerical methods for Computational Fluid Dynamics or Structural Mechanics analyses using advanced programming techniques.
  • Conducts research and evaluation of technologies and methods for efficient operation and control of energy, water, and other resources.
Responsibilities
  • Performs highly complex assignments by compiling and evaluating design and test data, preparing technical specifications, analyzing technical data to determine appropriate limits and variables for product, process or materials specifications.
  • Analyzes and interprets complex data. Takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions.
  • Prepares and presents advanced technical reports and presentations to clients, both formal and informal.
  • Conducts and/or leads technical projects or major phases of technical projects.
  • Provides technical direction to and coordinates the efforts of engineers and technical support staff in the performance of assigned projects within time and budget constraints.
  • Reviews projects progress and evaluates results.
  • Recommends modifications and corrections in technical analyses and design to ensure project completion.
  • Prepares technical sections of proposals. May manage proposals or major sections of large proposals.
  • Builds relationships with internal and external clients. Prepares and presents final reports to clients and stakeholders. Communicates with client regarding the schedule and quality of deliverables.
  • Leads IR&D studies and leads lower level staff. Contributes to IR&D studies and works on projects involving innovative methods or applications. Leads lower level or follow-on work.
  • Supports business development efforts led by others and maintains business interactions with external clients. Contributes to marketing and project development by providing technical expertise and executing responsibilities in client relations. Investigates new project opportunities.
  • May assist with the coordination of and participation in Battelle-sponsored conferences. Participates in scientific conferences, peer review panels, and increases company visibility through publications. Trains lower-level staff to improve technical development. Coordinates and provides day-to-day work direction to lower-level staff to support overall project goals.
Key Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field with 8 years of experience or master’s degree in related field with 5 years of experience or PhD with 2 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in a related field.
