Job summary

Midrex Technologies, based in Charlotte, NC, seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to design and analyze systems for Direct Reduction plants and new tech initiatives. You will lead the mechanical design effort, coordinate engineers and designers, review vendor submittals, and provide mentorship.

The role requires a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, 10+ years in an industrial setting (steel preferred), and travel up to 25% internationally and domestically.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in an industrial or technical environment, preferably related to steel industry.
  • Willingness to travel 10%–25% internationally and domestically.
  • Excellent technical writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk and Microsoft tools.

Responsibilities

  • Perform designs and mechanical analyses with direction from a Senior Mechanical Engineer.
  • Sketch conceptual designs and guide designers to develop drawings.
  • Lead mechanical design efforts for projects by directing engineers and designers and reviewing drawings and calculations.
  • Review vendor submittals, QA documents, and purchasing quotations; support purchasing efforts.
  • Travel to fabrication workshops and job sites to analyze equipment and gain design experience.
  • Provide mentorship to mechanical engineers and designers.

Qualifications: Position Summary:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer provide design of systems and equipment associated with the design and construction of Direct Reduction plants and new technology initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Senior engineers act as mechanical discipline leads providing technical support for various projects and initiatives. Senior engineers will not have direct reports but will assign work to other engineers and designers.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Perform designs and mechanical analyses through calculations basic to Mechanical Engineering with direction from a Senior Mechanical Engineer, if necessary.
  • Sketch conceptual designs, transferring ideas to the designers for development of mechanical drawings.
  • Coordinate the mechanical design effort by acting as Lead Mechanical Engineer for projects by:
    • directing the efforts of assigned engineers and designers for the layout of equipment, etc.,
    • checking mechanical drawings, calculations, sketches, etc. for the project,
    • developing specifications/requisitions for support of purchasing effort, and
    • review and approve purchasing quotations, vendor drawings, and QA documents.
  • Provide technical support for the Aftermarket, Inspections, & Purchasing departments with review of vendor submittals and on-site inspections of mechanical equipment.
  • Provide direction and technical support for designers.
  • Analyze designed and vendor supplied equipment for adherence to engineering specifications, required codes & standards, and project requirements.
  • Check drawings and drafting for adherence to designs.
  • Develop new technology designs and incorporation to larger systems.
  • Review designs and assist other Senior Engineers and Management by making suggestions to improve an existing or proposed design relative to its function.
  • Travel to fabrication workshops and job sites to analyze equipment, collect data and information, interact with plant & fabricator personnel, perform on-site inspections and gain experience valuable to design considerations (i.e., operating conditions, temperature considerations, etc.).
  • Travel on business trips and/or field assignments as required to carry out departmental, project, & corporate tasks and functions.
  • Write Technical Specifications for mechanical equipment design, fabrication, procurement, etc.
  • Provide support to the Sales and Estimating groups in preparation of proposals, including sizing and selection of equipment, plant layout, and engineering man-hour estimates.
  • Work as a "team player" with all company departments and employees in all assignments. Work toward building consensus on all assignments by finding solutions which meet the best interests of all parties involved.
  • Coordinate projects with outside engineering consultants and Clients.
  • Propose and design equipment design improvements.
  • Provide mentorship to mechanical engineers and designers.
Skills/Abilities:Required:
  • Basic computer skills including use of Microsoft and Autodesk products.
  • Excellent technical writing and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to meet schedule and deliverable deadlines.
  • Excellent base of mechanical engineering technical skills and knowledge of processes.
  • Ability to use mechanical engineering principles for complex problem solving.
Skills/Abilities:Preferred:
  • International travel experience.
  • Industrial plant experience.
  • Computer aided simulation/analysis of Mechanical Equipment designs (FEA, CFD, Heat Transfer, etc.)
  • Design of Dust Collection systems with adherence to NFPA and local codes.
  • Design of industrial Fire Protection systems with adherence to NFPA and local codes.
  • Utilize design software for piping and gas system analysis/layout.
  • Design and troubleshooting of hydraulic systems.
  • Piping design and stress analysis including selection of pipe hangers and supports.
  • Material Handling system specification, layout, and design.
  • Water Treatment systems specification, layout, and design.
  • Specification, startup, and troubleshooting of water pump systems.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor of Science Mechanical or Industrial Engineering Degree; Bachelor of Science Mechanical or Industrial Engineering Technology Degree.
  • Minimum 10 years experience in an industrial or technical environment, preferably related to steel industry.
Travel Requirements:

10% - 25% International and Domestic based upon project demands

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to move around a project site, including climbing structures.
