Job summary

Virginia Transformer Corp. in the United States seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Expert to lead mechanical design of large oil-immersed power transformers up to 250 MVA, 230 kV.

You will own tank, core‑clamp, and internal assembly designs and drive manufacturable, cost‑effective solutions. You will mentor CAD engineers, coordinate with electrical, manufacturing, quality, and testing teams, perform structural analyses, and ensure compliance with IEEE/ANSI standards and customer specs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
• 12–15 years of mechanical design experience in transformer manufacturing.
• Experience with power transformers rated 100 MVA and above is required.
• Experience leading mechanical design teams and CAD designers is expected.

Responsibilities

• Design transformer tanks, covers, bases, sidewalls, stiffeners, and reinforcement structures.
• Perform structural calculations for tank wall and cover thickness and stiffener sizing.
• Design cores and coils clamping frames, yoke beams, tie rods, and clamping plates.
• Develop mechanical arrangements for securing core‑and‑coil assemblies during manufacturing and service.
• Evaluate axial and radial winding forces during short‑circuit conditions and ensure stability.
• Coordinate with electrical design to prevent excessive heating of structural components.
• Design external components such as bushings, radiators, oil piping, and accessories.
• Ensure design compatibility with insulation systems, oil, and operating temperatures.
• Review drawings for fabrication, assembly, and testing; support manufacturing with DFMA principles.
