Job summary

Ashland Conveyor Products seeks a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to independently develop industrial equipment from concept through production. The role owns complex assignments, supports prototypes and testing, and delivers production-ready documentation with engaging collaboration across teams.

You will design modular platforms, mentor junior engineers, and ensure manufacturability and safety across product lines.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years mechanical design or product development experience.
• Experience designing machinery, industrial equipment, or similar systems.
• Advanced 3D CAD skills; SolidWorks preferred.
• Strong manufacturing knowledge across fabrication, machining, sheet metal, welding, fasteners, bearings, shafts, motors, power transmission.
• Experience with calculations, drawings, tolerancing, BOM, prototyping, and validation.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with limited supervision.
• Experience with machine safety, risk assessment, ERP, PDM, configurable products, design for manufacturing, and value engineering preferred.
• Material-handling or conveyor experience helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design projects from concept through production release.
• Develop concepts, prototypes, test equipment, and production-ready designs.
• Create accurate 3D models, drawings, tolerance schemes, and bills of material.
• Apply engineering judgment to performance, safety, reliability, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability.
• Develop test plans, lead validation, document results, and resolve identified risks.
• Investigate failures, production concerns, and field issues and lead corrective action through completion.
• Integrate motors, sensors, wiring, controls, guarding, and safety devices with electrical and controls engineering.
• Work directly with manufacturing, purchasing, quality, suppliers, sales, and customers.
• Develop modular product platforms, reusable components, standards, and design guidelines.
• Mentor junior engineers and designers and contribute to formal design reviews.
• Keep leadership informed of status, risks, decisions, and resource needs.
• Work with sales/manufacturing on complex customer needs and process improvements.
• Make technical decisions within assigned project requirements.
• Recommend product architecture, materials, components, testing and methods.
• Request design reviews and stop work if safety or requirements remain unresolved.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
