Job summary

ALTEN Technology USA is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to lead the design and development of mechanical systems for aerospace/defense applications. You will drive from concept through production readiness, applying strong mechanical design skills and GD&T standards.

You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams across engineering disciplines, provide technical leadership, and support prototype builds, testing, and qualification. The role emphasizes mentorship and rigorous design practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 6+ years designing aerospace/defense products and systems.
  • Experience from testing through qualification to implementation.
  • Strong mechanical design with drawing standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and GD&T.
  • Experience using CAD/CAE tools for analyses.
  • Understanding of mechanics, materials, stress, and fundamentals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of mechanical systems from concept to production readiness.
  • Create innovative solutions meeting customer requirements and constraints.
  • Perform calculations, trade studies, and tolerance analyses to support decisions.
  • Support multiple programs, maintaining quality, schedule, and objectives.
  • Review and validate analyses and design outputs for accuracy and compliance.
  • Generate complete design packages including BOMs and drawings.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, systems, and test teams to transition designs to production.
  • Provide technical support for prototypes, hardware integration, testing, and qualification.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote engineering best practices.
  • Apply engineering judgment to solve high‑level aerospace/defense challenges.

As a Senior Design Engineer you will be responsible for;

  • Leading the design and development of mechanical systems, structural hardware, and mechanisms from early concept through production readiness.
  • Creating innovative engineering solutions that meet customer requirements, performance objectives, and environmental constraints.
  • Performing engineering calculations, trade studies, tolerance analyses, and evaluations to support design decisions.
  • Supporting multiple development programs simultaneously while maintaining quality, schedule, and technical objectives.
  • Reviewing and validating engineering analyses, calculations, and design outputs to ensure technical accuracy and compliance.
  • Generating complete design packages including bills of materials, assembly drawings, and release documentation.
  • Collaborating with manufacturing, quality, systems, and test engineering teams to transition designs into production and qualification.
  • Providing technical support for prototype builds, hardware integration activities, development testing, and qualification efforts.
  • Serving as a technical mentor to junior engineers and contributing to the growth of engineering best practices.
  • Applying sound engineering judgment to solve complex technical challenges in high-performance aerospace and defense applications.

Qualifications;

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 6+ years of experience designing aerospace, defense, or other highly engineered products and systems.
  • Demonstrated success developing hardware that has progressed through testing, qualification, and implementation.
  • Strong mechanical design background with expertise in engineering drawing standards and design best practices.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience utilizing CAD and CAE tools to support product development and engineering analyses.
  • Strong understanding of mechanics, material behavior, stress analysis, and engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, requirements, and engineering documentation.
  • Experience creating and managing bills of materials, detailed drawings, and product definition packages.
  • Working knowledge of military, aerospace, or commercial engineering specifications and standards.

Salary Range: $135,000 - $165,000

Location: Onsite in Mukilteo, WA

The actual salary offered is dependent on various factors including, but not limited to, location, the candidate’s combination of job-related knowledge, qualifications, skills, education, training, and experience
