Job description

Overview
  • Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all
  • Aurora is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for the Compute Product Engineering team within the HPE (Hardware Product Engineering) group
  • The HPE Mechanical Design team is responsible for the development of all custom hardware modules in the Aurora Driver Kit (ADK) including Compute modules, Sensor Pods, and Lidar
  • The team works cross-functionally with EE, layout, CAE, Reliability, EMC, NPI, Operations, and other R&D teams to deliver the robust, scalable electro‑mechanical solutions that power the Aurora Driver
  • Our team starts development at the earliest stages of product scoping and technology exploration and carries products through mass production at scale with our manufacturing partners
  • You will support the development of our next‑generation Aurora Driver Module, which integrates our primary, in‑house developed computer along with various Electronic Control Units (ECUs) into an assembly ready to be installed on the manufacturing lines of our partner OEMs
  • This role owns both individual module design and their integration into the vehicle architecture from concept through production, driving robust, manufacturable designs for compute hardware deployed in safety‑critical environments
  • In addition, you will support and sustain products driving autonomously on roads today
  • This is a high‑impact, cross‑functional role at the intersection of mechanical design, electronics packaging, and vehicle integration
Responsibilities
  • Skillfully collaborate with electrical, manufacturing, and reliability teams to successfully deliver integrated hardware solutions
  • Design for a large range of manufacturing methods with proven experience in past projects to launch products effectively
  • Own individual module design and integration into vehicle architecture from concept through production, ensuring robust, manufacturable designs for compute hardware in safety‑critical environments
  • Support and sustain products currently in autonomous road operation
  • Engage as a high‑impact, cross‑functional contributor at the intersection of mechanical design, electronics packaging, and vehicle integration
Qualifications

Ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical product design, with a focus on electronics packaging and vehicle integration.

  • BS / MS in Mechanical Engineering and 4+ years of industry experience in Mechanical Engineering
  • Proficient in CAD design & 2D drawing creation using GD&T, Catia 3DX preferred
  • Ability to complete tolerance analysis for complicated assemblies and apply Worst‑Case and RSS when appropriate
  • Exposure to designing for harsh environments including Shock/Vibration and temperature cycling with long‑term durability
  • Prior experience creating mechanical parts that interface with electrical components (PCBAs, sensors, etc.)
  • Strong presentation and documentation skills for participating in critical design decisions
  • Experience in troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis of hardware systems
  • Exposure to component design for high‑volume manufacturing processes like injection molding, die‑casting, and stamping
  • Willingness to travel within the US and/or internationally 3–4 times a year
  • Experience with automotive ECUs or high‑performance compute systems and integration into vehicles
  • Experience with high power, high thermal density, and high‑speed electronics (e.g., server / networking design, avionics design) and deep understanding of their integration challenges
  • Experience designing mechanical control outlines (MCO) of PCB assemblies
  • Background in autonomous vehicles, robotics, and/or automotive vehicle design
