Job description

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer | $160,000–$200,000 + Equity
Menlo Park, CA | 5 days onsite

A lot of mechanical engineers get to design a component. Far fewer get to own a machine from an idea through to hundreds or thousands operating in the real world.

I’m working with an early-stage robotics company tackling a surprisingly expensive problem in last-mile logistics: the hours delivery drivers lose every day loading, organizing and retrieving packages.

They’re building a robotic system that retrofits into existing delivery vehicles, effectively turning the cargo space into an automated storage and retrieval system. Customer demand is already there, the engineering team is growing, and they now need a genuinely hands‑on Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to help turn the technology into a production‑scale product.

You’ll own significant mechanical systems yourself – designing mechanisms, actuated structures, transmissions and moving assemblies in SolidWorks, building and testing prototypes, debugging failures and then doing the less glamorous but incredibly important work of making them reliable and manufacturable.

The key thing is ownership. They don't need someone who designed one bracket on a 200-person program. They want someone who can point at a physical product and say: I designed that, these were the decisions I made, these were the problems we hit, and this is how I got it into production.

The background that fits:
  • 5+ years designing complex mechanical or mechatronic products
  • Strong SolidWorks and hands‑on mechanical design capability
  • Mechanisms, motors, actuators, transmissions or other moving machinery
  • Strong fundamentals across tolerancing, dynamics, vibration, fatigue and FEA
  • DFM/DFA, drawings, BOMs, FMEA and production documentation
  • Personally taken hardware through design → prototype → test → production
  • Robotics, automation or end‑effector experience would be particularly relevant

This is a small, properly early‑stage hardware team. You'll work directly with electrical, software, controls and manufacturing engineers, spend time building and debugging real hardware, work with suppliers and see your designs deployed with customers.

That means high ownership, fast decisions and very little hiding behind process. It also means 5 days a week onsite in Menlo Park – this is intentionally an in‑person hardware environment.

$160,000–$200,000 + meaningful early‑stage equity, with potential flexibility for an exceptional hire.

If you're a mechanical engineer who gets more satisfaction from shipping machines than presenting CAD, this is worth a conversation.
