Role Overview

The Senior MDM Data Steward serves as the authoritative steward for patient and provider domains for master data across the Enterprise Data Platform, providing leadership for the operational governance, quality, and integrity of enterprise identity data. This role owns the stewardship framework supporting patient and provider master records and is accountable for ensuring that Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) patient global identifiers and MDM provider global identifiers within the Silver (conformed canonical) layer remain accurate, complete, traceable, and trusted for analytics, reporting, regulatory compliance, operational decision-making, and AI-driven use cases. Operating with a high degree of independence, the Senior MDM Data Steward leads identity resolution activities, establishes and maintains stewardship standards, and exercises judgment in the review and disposition of complex match, merge, and identity exception scenarios. The steward proactively identifies data quality risks, drives remediation efforts across source systems, oversees survivorship rule execution, and serves as the primary escalation point for patient and provider identity-related issues. In partnership with Business Data Owners, Data Governance leaders, and source-system stakeholders, this role influences stewardship practices, promotes data quality accountability, and drives continuous improvement of master data management processes. The Senior MDM Data Steward also owns the maintenance and ongoing governance of patient and provider business glossary terms, data quality rules and definitions, lineage context, stewardship procedures, issue records, and related governance artifacts within Snowflake Horizon Catalog. Through active monitoring, analysis, and stewardship leadership, the role ensures critical business and technical metadata remains current, actionable, and aligned with enterprise data governance standards and strategic data management objectives. Consistent with LifeStance’s values, every member of the LifeStance team is expected to support each other and the mission, which may mean participating in projects and initiatives and performing functions and responsibilities not specifically outlined in this job description.

COMPENSATION: $109,000 - $130,000/annually in addition to a competitive bonus plan

Key Responsibilities
  • Identity Resolution, Match Stewardship, and Operational Leadership (approximately 40%)
    • Lead enterprise MDM stewardship operations by directing work queue activities, adjudicating complex identity resolution scenarios, resolving potential matches and duplicates, correcting improperly merged identities, and establishing consistent record governance practices for manually reviewed records.
    • Serve as the senior escalation point for patient identity management issues, investigating overlays, duplicates, and cross-system identity conflicts originating from athenaOne, AdvancedMD, and other source systems; determine root causes, drive corrective actions, and recommend process improvements to reduce recurrence.
    • Own the governance and integrity of the provider master data domain, establishing and enforcing standards for the reconciliation of NPI, taxonomy, licensure, credentialing status, payer enrollment, practice location, employment status, and related attributes across enterprise source systems.
    • Provide leadership for provider data quality and governance initiatives, ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and usability of provider practice, location, and organizational affiliation data supporting operational, analytical, credentialing, reimbursement, and regulatory reporting needs.
    • Partner with Data Architecture to evaluate and tune Verato match thresholds, referential matching configuration, survivorship, and attribute precedence rules; measure the effect on auto-match, potential-match, unmatched, and false-positive rates before changes are promoted.
    • Ownership over establishing and maintaining enterprise standards for data stewardship decisions, ensuring comprehensive documentation of exceptions, adjudication rationale, survivorship outcomes, merge and unmerge activities, and record-resolution actions to support auditability, compliance, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Data Quality, Issue Management & Silver Layer Validation (approximately 25%)
    • Establish and own the business acceptance standards for patient and provider mastered records, source-to-global ID crosswalks, identity resolution outcomes, and golden-record quality within the Snowflake Silver layer, ensuring alignment with enterprise data governance and operational objectives.
    • Provide oversight of EMPI patient and provider global ID integrity within the Snowflake Silver layer by proactively identifying data quality defects, validating adherence to business rules, and directing remediation efforts with Data Engineering and DataOps teams to ensure timely resolution.
    • Define, govern, and continuously refine master data quality standards and performance thresholds, including metrics related to unmatched records, duplicate records, orphaned source IDs, stale provider attributes, missing NPI values, invalid affiliations, and incomplete required attributes; communicate performance trends and improvement recommendations to stakeholders.
    • Lead the governance and lifecycle management of patient and provider master data issues, prioritizing remediation activities based on business impact, overseeing issue resolution progress, and providing transparent reporting on ownership, remediation status, risk exposure, and closure outcomes.
    • Independently lead strategic trend analysis and root-cause investigations to identify systemic defects across registration, scheduling, provider onboarding, credentialing, human resources, interfaces, and source application workflows; recommend and influence corrective actions that improve data quality and operational efficiency.
    • Own the maintenance and governance of master data lineage and identifier crosswalks, ensuring accurate traceability between source-system MRNs, provider identifiers, and enterprise global IDs while supporting audit, compliance, and operational reporting requirements.
    • Serve as the primary business lead for identity-related incidents and data quality escalations, coordinating cross-functional resolution efforts, driving stakeholder alignment, and ensuring corrective actions are effectively prioritized, tested, and promoted through established release and change-management processes.
  • Governance, Metadata & Policy (approximately 20%)
    • Establish and govern enterprise patient and provider master data standards, defining business terminology, required attributes, permissible values, data ownership, attribute precedence, relationship hierarchies, and merge/unmerge policies to ensure consistent and compliant master data management practices across the organization.
    • Own the stewardship framework and metadata management processes for Patient and Provider domains by maintaining business glossary terms, data quality standards, stewardship procedures, issue records, and lineage documentation within the Snowflake Horizon Catalog, ensuring transparency and accessibility for business and technical stakeholders.
    • Serve independently as the primary stewardship leader for Patient and Provider domains within the Data Governance Steering Committee, influencing enterprise governance decisions and partnering with Business Data Owners to establish data definitions, quality expectations, usage standards, and remediation priorities.

    • Partner with Privacy, Compliance, and business stakeholders to assess regulatory and policy impacts on identity management practices, providing stewardship leadership for consent restrictions, sensitive data handling requirements, healthcare regulatory obligations, golden-record usage, and downstream data access controls.
    • Drive the development and continuous improvement of master data standards that support regulatory reporting, quality initiatives, reimbursement processes, payer requirements, and broader enterprise business objectives, ensuring data assets remain reliable, compliant, and fit for purpose across the organization.
  • Source-System Improvement, Reporting & Enablement (approximately 15%)
    • Provide leadership and oversight for enterprise master data remediation efforts, directing corrective actions to registration, provider credentialing, human resources, practice operations, and other source-system owners; ensure timely resolution, accountability, and sustainable process improvements that prevent recurring data quality issues within mastered records.
    • Partner with operational and business leaders to strengthen upstream data governance and capture processes, identifying opportunities to enhance controls, workflows, and accountability measures that reduce the creation of duplicate, incomplete, and conflicting patient and provider records at the source.
    • Develop, own, and present executive-level stewardship performance reporting, delivering monthly scorecards and actionable insights on duplicate rates, unmatched records, match accuracy, exception backlog and aging, source correction effectiveness, provider data completeness, global ID coverage, and recurring root-cause trends to support informed decision-making.
    • Serve as the primary stewardship liaison with MDM vendors and implementation partners, providing leadership in troubleshooting match-quality issues, evaluating configuration recommendations, validating platform capabilities, assessing business impacts, and guiding release planning and implementation decisions.
    • Lead business stewardship activities for MDM platform implementations and enhancements, overseeing data profiling, duplicate remediation strategies, threshold calibration, user acceptance testing, cutover readiness, workflow adoption, stakeholder engagement, and post-production stabilization to ensure successful implementation outcomes and sustained business value.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in healthcare data stewardship, health information management (HIM), patient identity, provider data management, or MDM operations, including direct responsibility for patient or provider master data quality.
  • Hands-on experience with an enterprise EMPI or MDM platform, including steward queue management, duplicate remediation, merge/unmerge workflows, survivorship, and match-rule evaluation.
  • Verato experience is strongly preferred; Reltio, NextGate/Rhapsody, Profisee, IBM Initiate, or comparable experience is acceptable.
  • Working knowledge of healthcare patients and provider data structures and workflows.

  • Provider data expertise, including NPI/NPPES, taxonomy, state licensure, credentialing lifecycle, payer enrollment, locations, affiliations, and organizational relationships.
  • Proficient SQL skills and the ability to independently query Snowflake to investigate identity issues, validate global ID assignments, profile defects, and verify remediation.
  • Experience defining data quality rules, managing issue backlogs, performing root-cause analysis, and communicating trends and business impact to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Understanding of HIPAA privacy and security requirements as applied to identity data, access, auditability, and merge/unmerge operations.
  • Ability to document standards, facilitate cross-functional decisions, train operational users, and communicate data quality findings to non-technical leaders.
