Vulcan Elements in the United States is seeking a Senior Material Scientist to own the science connecting protective metallic coatings to corrosion resistance and the verification work. Based at the RTP lab, you will support the Benson, NC manufacturing facility by developing and qualifying lab and pilot-scale processes and coordinating with external suppliers.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field.
• 3+ years hands-on experience in metallic coatings, surface finishing, or corrosion protection in industrial R&D.
• Experience with SEM/EDS, XRD, optical microscopy, and coating-thickness/adhesion testing.
• Familiarity with structured failure-analysIs methodology.
• Strong DOE and statistical analysis skills.
• Proven technical writing and cross-functional communication.
• Experience managing external suppliers or contract processors.

Responsabilités

• Develop, qualify, and optimize protective metallic coatings for NdFeB magnets to meet specs.
• Design and run coating process experiments and correlate variables with quality and performance.
• Perform materials characterization and failure analysis across R&D and production samples.
• Manage relationships with external coating suppliers and toll processors.
• Partner with process engineering to understand how up-/downstream variables affect coatings and magnet properties.
• Lead root-cause investigations for coating defects and quality escapes, drive CAPAs.
• Author and maintain process documentation, test protocols, and supplier specifications.
• Present results, recommendations, and risk assessments to cross-functional partners and leadership.
• Provide mentorship to junior engineers and lab technicians.
