Job summary

Blue Origin Engines in Washington state is seeking an experienced Materials & Processes leader for Metallic Additive Manufacturing. You will guide AM hardware development, implement robust processes, and mentor engineers across a cross‑functional team to advance spaceflight materials and components.

The role emphasizes process development, materials characterization, and collaboration with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver reliable AM solutions for space propulsion systems.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years metallic AM experience.
  • Bachelor's in Materials Science/Engineering or related field.
  • Principle investigator in process development and optimization of metallic AM processes.
  • Hands on experience measuring and characterizing AM of nickel, aluminum, and copper alloys.
  • Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring progress, resources, and budgets.
  • Experience with powder metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of characterization methods: SEM, EDS, EBSD, PSD, XRF, ICP, OES.
  • Proven experience developing and executing test plans for materials/components.
  • Proven experience developing and executing experimental plans and reporting results.
  • Strong written and PC skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead AM Materials & Processes team to direct Additive Manufacturing efforts and hardware.
  • Identify low maturity AM technologies to improve performance or manufacturability of engines.
  • Mentor and support AM M&P engineers.
  • Develop AM processes, parameters, requirements, and specs for metallic materials.
  • Lead test campaigns: design, collect, analyze material data for AM metals and engine hardware.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to implement AM requirements.
  • Execute root cause and corrective actions for AM builds.
  • Optimize and production-harden AM processes to increase throughput and reduce variability.
  • Contribute to internal engineering and quality processes to standardize material evaluation.

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing, and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security, and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking team of specialists, technicians, and engineers, you will be responsible for Materials & Processes tasks related to Metallic Additive Manufacturing for various spaceflight systems and Blue Origin as a company. You will share in the team's impact on all aspects of technology roadmap and maturation, and process, machine and material development strategy. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities
  • Lead tactical and strategic efforts within a cross‑functional Materials & Processes team to lead direction of Additive Manufacturing efforts and hardware within Blue Origin's world class in‑house facilities.
  • Identify low maturity Additive Manufacturing technologies to improve technical performance or manufacturability of liquid rocket engines.
  • Mentor and support a team of competent high performing AM M&P engineers.
  • Develop Additive Manufacturing processes, parameters, requirements, and specifications for existing and novel metallic materials.
  • Lead test campaigns designing, collecting and analyzing material properties data for in‑house produced Additively Manufactured metallic materials and Engines hardware.
  • Collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to implement requirements in all phases of AM coupled with robust production solutions and design for manufacture.
  • Execute root cause and corrective actions efforts AM builds.
  • Optimize and production harden AM processes to increase throughput and decrease variability.
  • Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation and implementation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 7+ years directly related Metallic Additive Manufacturing experience.
  • Minimum Bachelors in material science/engineering or related field.
  • Principle investigator in process development and optimization of metallic Additive Manufacturing processes.
  • Hands on experience measuring, analyzing, developing, characterizing Additive Manufacturing of nickel (e.g. Inconel), aluminum, and copper alloys.
  • Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and managing budgets.
  • Experience with powder metallurgy.
  • Knowledge of applicability of characterization methods such as SEM, EDS, EBSD, PSD measurements, XRF, ICP, and OES.
  • Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components or materials.
  • Proven experience developing and executing experimental plans, analyzing data and concisely reporting the results.
  • Strong written and personal computer skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters or PhD in Material Science/Engineering or related field.
  • Experience in Laser Powder Bed Fusion industry experience.
  • Experience transitioning materials and processes from development to production.
  • Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and managing budgets.
  • Product impact focused mindset.
  • Experience with statistical analysis.

Base Pay Range for: WA applicants is $145,188.00 - $203,263.20
