Job summary

Coinbase, a remote-first company, is seeking a Senior Data Engineer, Market Data on the Institutional Markets team. You will build and operate systems that capture, normalize, and distribute real-time market data across Coinbase with low latency.

You’ll design low-latency services, maintain feed handlers and venue connectivity, improve reliability, and collaborate with engineers and product teams to power Coinbase's institutional trading roadmap.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of backend engineering experience building and maintaining production low-latency systems.
• Hands-on experience with market data infrastructure (feed handlers, normalization, or distribution).
• Proficiency in low-latency Java or C++ and familiarity with Aeron, SBE, or similar messaging frameworks.
• Familiarity with venue/exchange connectivity and market data protocols (FIX, ITCH/OUCH, multicast).
• Track record shipping features end-to-end and operating what you build in production.
• Generative AI should be used responsibly with human oversight to improve workflows.

As a Senior Data Engineer, Market Data on the Institutional Markets team, you'll build and operate the systems that capture, normalize, and distribute real‑time market data across Coinbase at low latency - the feed handlers, venue connectors, and distribution layer that form the backbone of a unified trading platform.

What you'll do:

• Build and maintain market data components including feed handlers, normalization pipelines, distribution systems, and venue connectivity.

• Drive reliability and performance improvements through observability, on‑call participation, and incident response.
• Write high‑quality, well‑tested code and contribute to engineering standards on a lean team.
• Partner with engineers, product managers, and cross‑functional stakeholders to deliver market data capabilities that support Coinbase's institutional trading roadmap.

Required Skills and Experience:

• 3+ years of backend engineering experience building and maintaining production low‑latency systems.
• Hands‑on experience with at least one area of market data infrastructure (feed handlers, normalization, or distribution).
• Proficiency in low‑latency Java (or C++) and familiarity with high‑throughput messaging frameworks (Aeron, SBE, or similar).
• Familiarity with venue/exchange connectivity and market data protocols (FIX, ITCH/OUCH, multicast).
• Track record shipping features end‑to‑end and operating what you build in production.
• Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business‑ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Pay Transparency Notice:

Base salary varies by location (see range below). Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)).

Annual base salary range (excluding equity and bonus):

$191,250 — $225,000 USD
