Job summary

Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine is seeking a Senior Manager to lead the Workflow, Applications and Plug-ins team, delivering reusable GenAI applications and scalable scientific workflows across R&D in a hybrid role based in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

You will translate priorities into robust designs, mentor engineers, and partner with Platforms and data teams to ensure high-quality releases with governance and security in mind.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in AI/ML, CS, Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related field with 3+ years hands-on AI/GenAI experience.
• Experience delivering production software or AI applications and leading complex technical work across multiple contributors.
• Strong AI fundamentals: Python, APIs, version control, testing, and cloud application delivery.
• Understanding of LLMs, RAGs, evaluation, and limitations of agentic workflows.
• Ability to reason about data access, security, reliability and maintainability; partner with specialists for implementation.
• Evidence of effective technical mentoring, stakeholder communication and prioritization under competing demands.

Responsibilities

• Own the integrated application delivery plan across milestones, engineering capacity, dependencies and release risks.
• Translate validated user stories into technical designs and work packages.
• Define application interfaces and document architecture decisions with partners.
• Guide evidence-grounded generation, retrieval and agent workflow implementations.
• Evaluate build-versus-buy options considering quality, integration effort, maintainability and cost.
• Establish code review, automated testing and application release practices.
• Coordinate application integration with approved data products and vendor services.
• Agree clear handoffs for deployment, monitoring, incident response and ongoing support.
• Mentor scientists and engineers toward agreed deliverables.
• Communicate delivery tradeoffs and capacity constraints to leadership.
• Propose scope sequencing when demand exceeds available resources.

This position has a primary location of Raritan / Titusville, New Jersey ; Spring House, Pennsylvania. (US based). This is a hybrid role.

Role Summary

As an Senior Manager in the Workflow, Applications and Plug-ins team within Data, Data Science and AI Org, you will lead the engineering delivery of reusable GenAI applications and scientific workflows across R&D. Translate agreed product priorities into robust application designs, realistic delivery plans and maintainable releases. Provide technical leadership and coaching while partnering with Platforms, Innovation Engine, World Model, Data, AI Ops, AI Safety, evaluation and business teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the integrated application delivery plan, including milestones, engineering capacity, dependencies and release risks across approved use cases.
• Translate validated user stories into technical designs and work packages.
• Define application interfaces and document architecture decisions with platform and enterprise technology partners.
• Guide evidence-grounded generation, retrieval and agent workflow implementation.
• Evaluate build-versus-buy options using quality, integration effort, maintainability and cost.
• Establish code review, automated testing and application release practices.
• Incorporate evaluation standards, access controls, traceability and human-review requirements.
• Coordinate application integration with approved data products and vendor services.
• Agree clear handoffs for deployment, monitoring, incident response and ongoing support.
• Mentor scientists and engineers, review technical work and coordinate employees, contractors and federated contributors against agreed deliverables.
• Communicate delivery tradeoffs and capacity constraints to leadership.
• Propose scope sequencing when demand exceeds available resources.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in AI/ML, Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related field with 3+ years of hands‑on experience in AI/GenAI Science/Engineering.
• Demonstrated experience delivering production software or AI applications and leading complex technical work across multiple contributors.
• Strong AI/Gen AI Scientist fundamentals, including Python or a comparable language, APIs, version control, testing and cloud application delivery.
• Practical understanding of large language models, RAGs, evaluation and the limitations of agentic workflows.
• Ability to reason about data access, security, reliability and maintainability, and to partner with specialists for implementation.
• Evidence of effective technical mentoring, stakeholder communication and prioritization under competing demands.

Preferred Qualifications

• Life‑sciences R&D, scientific document workflows or other environments requiring traceable evidence and controlled human review.
• Reusable plugin architectures, workflow orchestration, enterprise integrations and management of vendor engineering contributions.
• Operational monitoring, regression testing and cost/performance optimization for AI-enabled applications.
• Experience fine‑tuning LLMs for specialized domains and deploying AI systems in cloud environments (AWS or Azure).
• Strong understanding of statistical validation methods for AI-driven workflows.
• Experience with Git‑based development and CI/CD pipelines.

Salary & Benefits

The anticipated base pay range for this position is : $137,000.00 - $235,750.00

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

• Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
• Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year
• Sick time - 48 hours per calendar year for employees who reside in the State of Colorado
• Sick time - 56 hours per calendar year for employees who reside in the State of Washington
• Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
