Job summary

Justworks in New York City seeks a Senior Claims Manager of Workers’ Compensation to lead a small team and manage high-exposure claims end-to-end. You will collaborate with Customer Success, Technology, and Legal to ensure accurate reserves, settlements, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in a TPA or PEO claims role.
  • Experience mentoring or leading peers or junior claims associates
  • Knowledge of WC regulations across multiple states
  • Strong reserving skills and understanding of indemnity, medical and expense components
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; comfortable with external partners
  • Proficiency with claims management systems and RMIS platforms
  • Experience supporting Return to Work programs and managed care coordination

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and support a small claims team with direction, workload oversight and coaching
  • Manage own caseload of complex, litigated, and high-severity claims from First Notice of Loss through closure
  • Review coverage decisions, reserves and settlement recommendations for accuracy and alignment with guidelines
  • Serve as primary escalation point for difficult claims, coverage disputes, or customer concerns
  • Conduct regular file audits and quality reviews with constructive feedback
  • Coordinate with TPAs, carriers, defense counsel, medical providers, and nurse case managers
  • Onboard and train new claims staff on PEO workflows and state compliance
  • Maintain knowledge of WC statutes and best practices across jurisdictions
  • Assist with reporting and loss trend analysis
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Who You Are

As a Senior Claims Manager of Workers Comp (WC), you will work collaboratively within Justworks’ Workers Compensation Team as well as cross-functionally with teams across Justworks including: Customer Success, Technology, Engineering & Product, Accounting, Business Intelligence, Onboarding, Legal, and Finance. You will carry your own caseload of complex and/or high exposure claims while providing day to day guidance and oversight to a small claims team. Operating within our PEO environment, you will serve as the first point of contact for escalations for the claims team, be a trusted resource for customer facing claim inquiries and a key contributor to process improvement initiatives.

Your Success Profile
What You Will Work On
  • Supervise and support a small claims team providing daily direction, workload oversight and performance coaching.
  • Manage your own active caseload of complex, litigated, and high-severity claims from First Notice of Loss through closure.
  • Review coverage decisions, reserves and settlement recommendations to ensure accuracy, consistency and alignment with company guidelines.
  • Serve as the primary escalation point for difficult claims, coverage disputes, or customer concerns that exceed team members authority levels.
  • Conduct regular file audits and quality reviews, delivering constructive feedback to improve individual and team performance.
  • Coordinate with TPAs, carriers, defense counsel, medical providers, and nurse case managers to drive timely, cost-effective claim resolutions.
  • Onboard and train new claims staff, ensuring familiarity with PEO workflows, customer structures, and state-specific compliance requirements.
  • Maintain current knowledge of WC statutes, filing requirements, and best practices across all jurisdictions in the company's footprint.
  • Assist the Claims Director with reporting, loss trend analysis, and identifying process improvement opportunities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of experience in a Third Party Claims Administration(TPA) or PEO experience in claims.
  • Some experience mentoring, training or informally leading peers or junior claims associates
  • Working knowledge of WC regulations in multiple states, ability to navigate jurisdictional differences confidently
  • Solid reserving skills and understanding of indemnity, medical and expense components of claim financials.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; comfortable interacting directly with PEO customers and external partners.
  • Proficiency with claims management systems an/or RMIS platforms
  • Experience supporting Return to Work programs and managed care coordination
  • Experience working cross-functionally
  • Experience with vendor management
  • Extremely detailed-oriented with great time management and organizational skills
  • Proactive and curious with a bias for action

The base wage range for this position based in our New York City Office is targeted at $131,000.00 to $169,000.00 per year.

Actual compensation is based on multiple factors that are unique to each candidate, including and not limited to skill set, level of relevant experience, and specific work location. Salary ranges for positions based in other locations may differ based on the cost of labor in that location.
