Job summary

The Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS) is seeking to fill the full-time role of Senior Manager, Communications & External Affairs to lead editorial content, stakeholder engagement and external relations. Reporting to the CEO, you will supervise the Communications Team and drive annual communications strategy.

Must have 7+ years in communications, strong writing and media relations skills, and the ability to translate complex scientific information for diverse audiences.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, public affairs, journalism, marketing, or related field.
• Minimum 7 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, stakeholder engagement, or nonprofit/public sector relations, including supervising staff.
• Demonstrated experience in media relations and messaging to multiple stakeholder groups.
• Experience presenting scientific data or environmental information to public sector entities.
• Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills for diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and implementation of an annual communications strategy aligned with GLOS’s strategic plan.
• Serve as primary point of contact for day-to-day media relations; supervise the Communications Specialist.
• Monitor news cycles and recommend proactive communication opportunities.
• Coordinate with media outlets and partners to disseminate key messages.
• Provide editorial oversight of team content and annual editorial calendar.
• Oversee GLOS website and digital presence using analytics.
