Job summary

Toyota Financial Services (TFS) in Plano, TX is seeking a Senior Manager - Software Engineering (Backend) to lead a high-performing team delivering scalable, resilient systems on AWS. You will own backend architecture, mentor engineers, and collaborate with product and frontend teams to ship secure, reliable platforms.

This role requires 10+ years in software, 3+ years in leadership, and deep AWS serverless expertise.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with strong backend or full-stack focus.
  • 3+ years in an engineering management or tech lead role.
  • Deep expertise in serverless architectures on AWS including Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB or Aurora Serverless, Step Functions, EventBridge/SQS/SNS, and S3.
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and/or Python for backend services.
  • Experience designing RESTful and GraphQL APIs with proper API contract design.

Who we’re looking for

At TFS, we’re building next-generation products that redefine mobility for millions of customers worldwide. We’re looking for a Senior Manager -Software Engineering - Backend with deep full-stack and backend expertise to lead a high-performing team delivering scalable, resilient systems on AWS.

This role is for someone who thinks in systems — someone who can design serverless architectures, drive API strategy, mentor engineers to do their best work, and partner closely with Product and Front-End Engineering to deliver reliable platforms that power customer-facing experiences. You’ll own the backend and platform engineering strategy for your domain, driving technical decisions while keeping your team moving fast and building with quality.

This position is based in Plano, TX. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within a commutable distance of this location.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead, grow, and retain a team of full-stack and backend engineers — hiring top talent, running performance reviews, coaching, and creating clear paths for career development

  • Own the backend architecture and technical direction for your domain, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability across all services

  • Drive engineering excellence through code quality standards, API design conventions, testing practices, and continuous improvement

  • Partner with Product, Design, and Front-End Engineering to define and deliver features from concept to production

  • Champion system reliability, observability, and security as first-class engineering concerns

  • Establish and enforce best practices around API design, data modeling, event-driven patterns, and serverless architecture on AWS

  • Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, and security teams to optimize CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, and cloud cost management

  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels — translating technical complexity into business impact

  • Balance strategic thinking with hands‑on involvement — you’re comfortable reviewing PRs, unblocking engineers, and diving into hard problems when needed

  • Monitor and improve key system metrics: latency, error rates, availability, and cost efficiency

What you bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend or full-stack focus, including 3+ years in an engineering management or tech lead role

  • Deep expertise in designing and buildingserverless architectures on AWS, including:

    • Lambdafor compute

    • API Gateway(REST and HTTP APIs) for service exposure

    • DynamoDBorAurora Serverlessfor data persistence

    • Step Functionsor other workflow orchestration tools

    • EventBridge,SQS, orSNSfor event-driven and async communication

    • S3for object storage and data lake patterns

    • CloudFrontfor API acceleration and edge caching

  • Strong proficiency inTypeScriptand/orPythonfor backend services — you can write or review production-quality code and hold your team to the same standard

  • Proven ability to designRESTful and GraphQL APIs, with a strong grasp of API contract design, versioning, error handling, and type‑safe tooling (e.g., OpenAPI, GraphQL Code Generator, tRPC)

  • Solid understanding ofInfrastructure as CodeusingAWS CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform

  • Experience withobservability and monitoringtooling: CloudWatch, X‑Ray, Datadog, or similar — you know how to instrument services and respond to incidents

  • Strong understanding ofsecurity best practices: IAM policies, least‑privilege access, secrets management (Secrets Manager, SSM Parameter Store), and data encryption at rest and in transit

  • Experience with testing practices: unit testing, integration testing, contract testing, and load testing for distributed systems

  • Familiarity withcontainerized workloads(ECS Fargate, Docker) for services that don't fit the serverless model

  • Excellent communication skills — you can articulate technical tradeoffs clearly to both engineers and non‑technical stakeholders

Added bonus if you have
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related field

  • Experience in the financial services, banking, or insurance industry

  • Experience designingmulti‑account AWS architectureswith proper governance and guardrails (AWS Organizations, Control Tower)

  • Familiarity withdata streamingpatterns using Kinesis, MSK (Managed Kafka), or similar

  • Experience withGenAI integrationon the backend (e.g., Bedrock, SageMaker endpoints, LLM orchestration patterns)

  • Experience withCI/CD pipelinesand deployment automation (CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, or similar)

  • Hands‑on experience withGraphQL federationor API gateway patterns for composing multiple services

  • AWS certifications (Solutions Architect, Developer Associate, or DevOps Engineer)
