Job description

Now Brewing – senior manager, Indirect Tax Strategy & Advisory

From the beginning, Starbucks set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and the rich tradition, but that also brought a feeling of connection. We are known for developing extraordinary leaders who share this passion and are guided by their service to others.

As a senior manager on the Indirect Tax team, you’ll lead sales and use tax strategy and advisory for new products, evolving business models, and enterprise-wide initiatives. You’ll serve as a strategic advisor to teams across the business, helping ensure sales and use tax requirements, risks, and opportunities are considered early and thoughtfully. This role is about shaping decisions, translating complex sales and use tax issues into clear, practical guidance, and owning the work from strategy through execution.

As a senior manager, you will:
  • Lead sales and use tax strategy for new products and initiatives, partnering with Tax Operations, Product, Finance, Legal, Accounting, and Technology teams to identify taxability, sourcing, and compliance considerations; advise on risks and opportunities; and help shape outcomes early in the process.
  • Act as the lead sales and use tax researcher – Analyze complex state and local tax issues, including product and service taxability, sourcing, and emerging business models; develop well-supported positions; and provide clear, research-based guidance.
  • Provide strategic guidance on changing sales and use tax laws and policy – Stay on top of new and evolving legislation, regulations, and administrative guidance; assess the impact to the business; and translate changes into clear, actionable recommendations for stakeholders and leadership.
  • Drive work end-to-end with strong ownership – Take projects from early scoping through execution, ensuring follow-through, clear documentation, and sustainable processes that support sales and use tax positions in close collaboration with the Tax Operations team.
  • Communicate complex sales and use tax concepts clearly – Translate technical requirements into practical insights and recommendations that help non-tax partners make informed business decisions.
We’d love to hear from people with:
  • 10+ years of experience in sales and use tax strategy, advisory, research, and planning
  • Experience in a corporate tax department, public accounting firm, or law firm
  • Strong knowledge of multistate sales and use tax, including taxability, sourcing, and related compliance considerations
  • Experience with Washington state and local B&O tax
  • Experience advising the business on complex initiatives, product launches, new service offerings, or strategic planning projects
  • Ability to interpret new sales and use tax legislation, regulations, and administrative guidance and determine business impacts
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally and influence stakeholders without direct authority
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate sales and use tax concepts for non-tax audiences
  • A high level of ownership and a track record of delivering results
  • Degree in Accounting, Law, or Business preferred
