This role focuses on global category strategy and supplier partnerships across Analytical Development & Testing (AD&T) to support development and launch milestones.

Qualifications

  • English fluency, written and oral.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, category management, supply chain, or related function.
  • Experience developing and executing category or sourcing strategies and managing complex supplier relationships.
  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, laboratory, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Ability to influence across regions, functions, and senior stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Strong business acumen, analytical problem-solving, project leadership, and executive communication skills.

Key Responsibilities
Category Strategy and Leadership
  • Develop and execute the global category strategy for Analytical Development & Testing across Innovative Medicine R&D and relevant partner organizations.
  • Lead strategies for external analytical development, method development, validation and transfer, characterization, release and stability testing, raw-material, drug-substance and drug-product testing, microbiology, compendial testing, and specialized laboratory services.
  • Establish long-range plans aligned with portfolio priorities, internal capabilities, externalization decisions, product lifecycle requirements, and future demand.
  • Maintain a cross-modal view of supplier capabilities, technology platforms, capacity, geographic coverage, quality performance, regulatory readiness, scalability, and market trends.
  • Ensure alignment with adjacent categories including CMC development and manufacturing, bioanalysis, clinical supply, laboratory equipment and automation, external manufacturing, and quality services.
  • Make recommendations to improve category strategies to maximize value to J&J for AD&T and the adjacent categories.
Supplier and Business Partnership
  • Develop and govern strategic supplier relationships that improve scientific capability, quality, delivery, responsiveness, innovation, cost competitiveness, sustainability, and business value.
  • Establish supplier segmentation, performance management, risk mitigation, and business continuity plans for critical services, specialized methods, constrained capacity, and geographically concentrated capabilities.
  • Identify Supplier Enabled Innovation opportunities involving new analytical technologies, laboratory automation, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and advanced data analytics.
  • Serve as the strategic procurement partner to Analytical Development, CMC Product Development, Therapeutics Development & Supply, Technical Operations, External Quality, Clinical Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and R&D leaders.
  • Translate portfolio and scientific requirements into category strategies, supplier‑selection criteria, sourcing approaches, commercial models, and contracting strategies.
  • Support critical development, regulatory, technology‑transfer, clinical, and launch milestones by aligning supplier capabilities and procurement plans with program requirements.
Strategic Sourcing, Value and Risk
  • Lead complex global and regional sourcing initiatives, supplier assessments, competitive bidding, negotiations, supplier selection, and contracting for analytical and laboratory services.
  • Develop fit‑for‑purpose commercial models including rate cards, preferred‑provider arrangements, bundled services, milestone‑based agreements, capacity reservations, insourced models, and strategic collaborations.
  • Deliver measurable financial and nonfinancial value through sourcing, demand management, supplier collaboration, benchmarking, category optimization, risk reduction, cycle‑time improvement, and access to scientific capabilities.
  • Use spend, demand, supplier, market, risk, and performance analytics to identify fragmentation, rate variation, concentration risk, contracting gaps, and opportunities for consolidation or diversification.
  • Integrate quality, regulatory, data integrity, intellectual property, cybersecurity, compliance, and continuity requirements into category decisions and supplier agreements.
  • Communicate category priorities, market insights, supplier risks, value opportunities, and recommendations through clear, executive‑ready materials and governance forums.
Organizational Leadership
  • Lead global, cross‑functional initiatives across Procurement, Finance, Legal, Quality, Technical Operations, Supply Chain, Information Technology, Privacy, and R&D.
  • Provide category expertise and guidance to colleagues supporting sourcing, contracting, analytics, supplier management, and project execution.
  • Coach and mentor procurement professionals and foster collaboration, inclusive leadership, accountability, external orientation, and continuous improvement.
  • Represent IM R&D Procurement in business forums, supplier engagements, industry events, and cross‑functional planning processes.
Requirements

Education Bachelor’s degree or equivalent university qualification required. MBA, Master’s degree, scientific degree, supply chain qualification, or other advanced degree preferred.

Required Experience and Skills
  • Fluency in English, written and oral.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, category management, supply chain, pharmaceutical development, laboratory services, external manufacturing, or a related function.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and executing category or sourcing strategies and managing complex supplier relationships, negotiations, and commercial arrangements.
  • Experience supporting pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, laboratory, scientific, technical, or other highly regulated environments.
  • Proven ability to influence across regions, functions, business units, and senior stakeholder groups without direct authority.
  • Strong business acumen, analytical problem‑solving, project leadership, change management, and executive communication skills.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally based on business and supplier needs.
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • Experience with Analytical Development & Testing, CMC Product Development, laboratory services, Clinical Manufacturing, Technical Operations, External Quality, or adjacent pharmaceutical‑development categories.
  • Knowledge of analytical method development, validation and transfer, characterization, stability and release testing, microbiology, and raw‑material, drug‑substance, or drug‑product testing.
  • Experience across small molecules, biologics, advanced therapies, cell and gene therapies, ADCs, peptides, RNA‑based therapies, radiopharmaceuticals, vaccines, or emerging modalities.
  • Experience managing external laboratories, contract testing organizations, development service providers, or insourced laboratory models in GLP, GCP, GMP, or other regulated environments.
  • Demonstrated success in supplier innovation, digital enablement, automation, global category management, business continuity, or category transformation.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is : $122,000.00 - $212,750.00

Additional Description for Pay Transparency

Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)). Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

  • Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
  • Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
  • Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
  • Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
  • Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
  • Bereavement Leave – 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year
