Job description

About Us

Powered by one of the largest global newsrooms in sports media, The Athletic brings sports fans the most comprehensive stories about the teams, sports and athletes they love. The Athletic's newsroom of 500+ full-time staff delivers in-depth coverage of hundreds of professional and college teams across more than 47 North American markets and all 20 football clubs in the English Premier League, as well as many Championship clubs.

About the Role

Join the data leadership team at The Athletic, the premier sports media division of The New York Times, and take ownership of a data pod. This is a critical data role that sits at the intersection of sports, digital subscriptions, and data strategy. This person will play a crucial role in advancing our analytics team to the next phase of development to help implement a best in class analytics practice.

We are seeking a Senior Manager, Analytics to lead and scale our Growth Product Insights practice. Following our recent migration to a modern data warehouse, you will act as a pivotal player‑coach‑bringing deep analytical rigor, defining key performance indicators, and guiding a growing team of data analysts. You will lead by example, building analytical models yourself while developing the talent around you to turn complex subscriber and product data into high‑leverage business decisions.

In this role, you will report to the Director, Data & Insights.

This role is 100% remote for candidates currently residing in the United States or Canada.

Responsibilities
  • Lead as a Player-Coach: Manage, mentor, and grow a team of Data Analysts. Model analytical rigor, evaluate statistical approaches, and actively contribute to hands‑on execution on ambiguous, high‑stakes projects.
  • Drive Proactive Insights: Shift the team’s mindset from reactive "service analytics" and dashboard maintenance to proactive strategic inquiry. Focus on answering the "why" behind performance metrics and translating data into concrete business recommendations.
  • Act as a Strategic Data Partner: Embed with Product, Design, and Growth leaders as a thought partner to influence roadmap strategy, prioritize high‑impact initiatives, and establish clear learning objectives before work begins.
  • Advance Experimentation & Measurement: Oversee product experimentation (A/B testing), causal inference, and behavioral/cohort modeling across digital destinations and app ecosystems, ensuring guardrails and success metrics are rigorously defined.
  • Build Trust in Data: Partner with upstream data and engineering teams to understand data pipelines, navigate complexity, and establish standardized, trusted metric definitions across the organization.
  • Leverage Modern Tools & AI: Integrate cutting‑edge data tools and modern generative AI capabilities into daily workflows to streamline routine tasks, accelerate analysis, and increase overall team capacity.
  • Embrace Our Mission: Demonstrate strong commitment to our values, journalistic independence, and the broader mission of The New York Times Company.
Requirements
  • 7+ years of progressive experience in data analytics, product analytics, or applied quantitative roles delivering reporting, analysis, and strategic insight.
  • 1-3+ years of experience formally managing, leading, or mentoring data scientists or analysts, with a track record of elevating analytical judgment in others.
  • Expertise in SQL and experience working with large‑scale relational databases / modern cloud data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery).
  • Proficiency in Python or R for statistical modeling, data manipulation, and deeper quantitative analysis.
  • Experience with modern BI / Data Visualization tools such as Looker, Tableau, or Mode.
  • Strong background in experimentation (A/B testing), causal inference, and cohort/retention modeling within a digital subscription or media environment.
  • Experience in digital media or subscription‑based business model highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with version control workflows (Git, Github, code reviews) highly preferred.
  • Experience navigating upstream data complexity and working with high‑volume, real‑time event data highly preferred.
  • Passion for sports media and digital publishing highly preferred.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in a quantitative field (Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Applied Math, or related field) highly preferred.

The annual base salary range for this role is $170,000.00 - $190,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non‑cash rewards and benefits.
