Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Assists an assigned crew and ensures supplies are available to complete assignments.
  • Cleans offices, hallways, lunch/break rooms, meeting rooms and stairways; performs sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, washing windows and mirrors, dusting, and trash removal.
  • Performs general grounds maintenance including mowing, edging, hedges trimming, pruning trees, weeding, planting flowers, and mulch.
  • Maintains sprinklers and repairs broken pipes as needed; transports vehicles to city shop for maintenance and services.
  • Troubleshoots basic maintenance problems in plumbing, equipment repair or replacement, painting, or related tasks.
  • Maintains landscaping, drainage and irrigation systems; treats plants for disease; backflow prevention devices installation and maintenance.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on pumps and motors; monitors water quality and chemistry; installs and calibrates chlorination controllers; and handles water lines and valves.
  • Estimates repair costs; sources equipment and supplies; supervises work in progress for quality, timeliness and safety; inspects completed work for code conformance.
  • Provides maintenance and repair work while supervising a small crew; assigns, reviews, and inspects tasks; trains employees and participates in performance appraisals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job description

This position provides complex maintenance and repairs to public works.

  • Assists an assigned crew; ensures the crew has adequate supplies to complete the assignment.
  • Cleans offices, hallways, lunch and break rooms, meeting rooms, and stairways, including sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping; washing windows and mirrors; dusting furniture and fixtures; and emptying trash.
  • Performs general grounds maintenance and landscaping duties: mows and edges grassy areas, trims hedges, prunes trees, pulls weeds, plants flowers, and spreads mulch.
  • Maintains sprinklers; repairs broken pipes as needed.
  • Transports vehicles to city shop for routine maintenance and services as needed.
  • Troubleshoots basic maintenance problems involving plumbing and equipment repair or replacement; painting; or related repair or installation.
  • Maintains landscaping, storm drainage, and irrigation systems; treats plants and turf for disease; installs and maintains backflow prevention devices;
  • Performs preventative maintenance on various pumps and motors.
  • Monitors water quality and chemistry; sizes and replaces mechanical seals; installs, calibrates, and troubleshoots chlorination controllers; and installs, repairs, replaces, and modifies water lines, mains, valves, and related distribution equipment.
  • Estimates cost of repairs; selects and requisitions necessary equipment and related supplies; oversees all work in progress to ensure quality, timeliness, and safety; inspects completed work to ensure quality and conformance to code.
  • Provides maintenance and repair work and supervises a small work crew; assigns, reviews, and inspects work; guides task performance; trains and develops employees; provides input to employee performance appraisals; promotes and observes safe work practices.
  • Performs general maintenance duties
  • Cleans and maintains job site, including laying sod, weed eating, brush removal, removing litter, streets, utilities, and other equipment.
    Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent; less than one year of related maintenance experience is necessary.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
May require the following certifications/licenses:
  • Confined Space Safety Certification
  • ICS100 andICS700
  • Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Traffic control flagging certification.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential duties.
  • Knowledge of job-related safety hazards and precautionary methods
  • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Skill in oral communication.
Minimum Standards

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Work is performed under the close supervision of the Supervisor. The supervisor

spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the

nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. These guidelines are generally

clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related maintenance duties. Regular and repetitive tasks, processes, or

operations requiring the selection and execution of actions based on defined procedures. Inclement weather and

heavy traffic conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to assist in the performance of traffic maintenance duties.

Supportive, informational, recording, or other services to assist others in producing correct and effective results;
minor consequences. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficiency and safety of city

roadways.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Little or no contact required except with immediate associates and direct supervisor.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve

problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching,
stooping, or walking. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or

equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force

occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust,
dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of

protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. One or more disagreeable elements (heat, fumes, cold,
vibration or wetness) are regularly present and objectionable, or continuing exposure to work situations that

could result in incapacitating accidents or periodic exposure to situations involving hazards that could result in

total disability, critical illness, or loss of life.
