Job summary

UMC is seeking a Senior CNC Machinist to operate and set up high-precision machines in Monticello, MN. You’ll ensure first-piece qualification and ongoing product conformance while supporting safety and production goals.

You will mentor less experienced machinists, troubleshoot tool-path issues, and collaborate with Engineering to implement process improvements. Strong GD&T and Vericut skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Machining or equivalent experience required.
• 5+ years machinist experience, 10+ years preferred.
• Strong GD&T knowledge and precision tolerance work.

About the Role

The Senior CNC Machinist is responsible for expert-level machine operation, setup, and quality assurance within their area. This role supports high standards of production and safety while embodying the company’s core values: Great People, Going Beyond, and Growing.

What You’ll Do

Operation and Setup

• Independently set up and operate machines for all jobs, ensuring adherence to company quality standards and production efficiency.
• Experience with Vericut or similar software to perform in-machine simulations of tool paths and verify in real-time to mitigate errors before actual machining.
• Ability to achieve planned production and scrap rates while ensuring efficient workflow, which may include completing secondary operations, i.e., deburring.
• Familiarity with different CNC control systems (e.g., Fanuc, Mitsubishi, MAPPS) and their respective programming, including a deep understanding of system-specific functions and commands.
• Expertise in executing comprehensive first-piece buy-offs, ensuring that all dimensions, tolerances, and specifications of the initial part are verified against part prints and quality inspection plan requirements.

Process Improvement and Collaboration

• Proactively recommend and implement process improvements in collaboration with Engineering to enhance production efficiency and quality.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to machine operation, engaging with Supervisors, Engineering, and Programming if process changes are needed.
• Keep a detailed log documenting insights and troubleshooting activities to promote enhanced success at shift hand-off.
• Collaborate with engineering on quotes and new process development.

Quality Control and Inspection

• Conduct in-process inspections of machined products, documenting results to ensure products meet specifications.
• Skilled in correlating CMM and hard check data with in-process measurements, utilizing statistical process control (SPC) techniques to assess product conformance and identify trends that may necessitate process adjustments to maintain a capable process.
• Ability to cross-validate first-piece inspections completed by fellow machinists, ensuring adherence to company quality standards

Maintenance, Mentoring, and Training

• Perform total productive machine maintenance, including minor repairs and troubleshooting activities.
• Provide mentorship to Apprentices, Junior Machinists, and CNC Machinists, using a structured approach to transfer knowledge and enhance their technical competencies in CNC machining.
• Assist machinists in diagnosing and resolving technical issues that arise during machining operations, leveraging analytical problem-solving skills to identify root causes and implement effective corrective actions.

Requirements

Education and Experience

• Associate’s degree in Machining or related field or work experience in place of education.
• 5+ years’ experience as a machinist required; 10+ years’ experience preferred

Competencies

• Experience machining with high-temp alloys/exotic materials.
• Proficient knowledge of GD&T.
• Subject matter expert and “go-to” in assigned machining area, collaborating with other Machinists and Supervisors.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged standing with occasional twisting (80-90% of the workday)
• Pushing/pulling carts and/or pallet jacks
• Dexterity with computers - the ability to type and use a mouse.
• Frequent lifting of materials up to 40 lbs., occasional lifting to 75 lbs.
• Continuous use of hands and upper extremities in fine and gross manipulation using various wrist positions and grip/pinch spans to operate equipment, push buttons, carry boxes, push carts, etc.
• Frequent firm grip with tools requiring torque to tighten machine parts, tooling, and fixtures
• Must be able to meet customer demand requirements for performing visual inspection and/or other product acceptance activities with or without accommodation (only for positions in which this is a requirement of the job per the customer requirement).
• Ability to pass an annual vision test.
