Job summary

Messer North America, Inc. is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support rotating machinery across our US facilities. You will provide technical engineering insights, develop maintenance scopes, and guide field teams through major maintenance events to optimize reliability.

The role requires travel and deep knowledge of predictive maintenance, vibration analysis, and lubrication monitoring. You will collaborate with Area Maintenance Strategy teams to ensure safe, efficient operations

  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance methodologies and technologies and interpretation of data.
  • Knowledge and experience working with and troubleshooting high speed rotating machinery.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical engineering support and SME recommendations for rotating machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Directly support major maintenance planning and execution through machinery scope development ( typically $250K–$2M per event ).
  • Support area maintenance strategy development and field execution.
  • Develop detailed machinery work scopes, budgets, contractor management, execution strategy and quality plans for turnarounds and major maintenance.
  • Provide direct field support during major maintenance with timely close-out reports and lessons learned.
  • Monitor machinery issues to ensure timely resolution and minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Assess condition monitoring data and prioritize maintenance with repair plans to ensure reliability.

Messer owns and operates a large portfolio of industrial gas plants, including ASU, CO2, H2, He, as well as on-site plants, spread across the globe serving customers within a wide range of industries. Rotating machinery is a key component required for operation of these industrial gas plants. This position will report to the Area Maintenance and Reliability Hub Team, supporting the Area Operations Teams, providing technical engineering support and SME recommendations for all rotating machinery and mechanical equipment utilized within the facilities in the area.

  • Provides technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance support to Area Plant Management, and Technicians for all rotating equipment applications including compressors, pumps, fans, gearboxes, and their auxiliary systems.
  • Directly supports Area Maintenance Strategy development and execution thru machinery scope development for major maintenance planning and execution (typically >=$250K - $2M each event). Ensures that the machinery aspects of the major maintenance plan are kept updated for assigned plant locations.
  • Supports area with day-to-day mechanical / machinery issues, and project support.
  • Utilizes standardized turnaround work scope templates in the development of the detailed machinery work scope, budget, contractor management, execution strategy, and quality plans for turnarounds, major maintenance, etc.
  • Provides direct support in the field for major maintenance execution of machinery scope, using effective quality plans. Provides timely close out reports that provide lessons learned for continuous improvement.
  • Supports the area for timely resolution of machinery issues leading to unplanned downtime.
  • Monitors history and condition of rotating equipment to determine and prioritize major maintenance scopes and requirements, including obsolescence aspects. Provides business case justifications as required to support required budgeting and timings for assigned plant locations.
  • Monitors the use of condition monitoring techniques for rotating machinery for the area. Routinely reviews condition-based vendor data reports and provide recommendations and necessary repair plans for any noted deficiencies to ensure reliable operation (Lube oil analysis, Vibration analysis, etc.).
  • Assesses the technical competency of contractors and service providers to ensure proper scope is assigned and the expected quality is received.

  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance methodologies and technologies as well as interpretation of the data (Vibration monitoring, oil analysis, thermography, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience working with and troubleshooting high speed rotating machinery.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 7-10 years of combined experience with at least 5 years in an operational and engineering environment working with rotating machinery.
  • Must be able to travel 30-40% (60-80 nights per year), often on less than 10 days notice.
