Job summary

Messer Americas is seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer to support rotating equipment across facilities in the area. You will provide technical engineering support, troubleshoot machinery, and advise on SME recommendations for operations and maintenance.

This role involves significant field work and collaboration with Area Operations Teams. Requirements include a Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, 7–10 years with rotating machinery, and 30–40% travel (60–80 nights per year).

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance support for rotating equipment including compressors, pumps, fans, gearboxes, and auxiliaries.
  • Supports major maintenance planning and execution for machinery scope (often $250K–$2M per event).
  • Develops detailed machinery work scope, budgets, contractor management, and quality plans for turnarounds and major maintenance.
  • Provides field support during major maintenance with timely close-out reports for lessons learned.
  • Monitors history and condition of rotating equipment to prioritize maintenance scopes and budgeting.
  • Reviews condition-based vendor data and recommends repair plans to ensure reliability.
  • Assesses contractor technical competency to ensure proper scope and quality.

Job Summary

Messer owns and operates a large portfolio of industrial gas plants, including ASU, CO2, H2, He, as well as on-site plants, spread across the globe serving customers within a wide range of industries. Rotating machinery is a key component required for operation of these industrial gas plants. This position will report to the Area Maintenance and Reliability Hub Team, supporting the Area Operations Teams, providing technical engineering support and SME recommendations for all rotating machinery and mechanical equipment utilized within the facilities in the area.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Provides technical support, troubleshooting, and maintenance support to Area Plant Management, and Technicians for all rotating equipment applications including compressors, pumps, fans, gearboxes, and their auxiliary systems.
  • Directly supports Area Maintenance Strategy development and execution through machinery scope development for major maintenance planning and execution (typically >=$250K - $2M each event). Ensures that the machinery aspects of the major maintenance plan are kept updated for assigned plant locations.
  • Supports area with day-to-day mechanical / machinery issues, and project support.
  • Utilizes standardized turnaround work scope templates in the development of the detailed machinery work scope, budget, contractor management, execution strategy, and quality plans for turnarounds, major maintenance, etc.
  • Provides direct support in the field for major maintenance execution of machinery scope, using effective quality plans. Provides timely close out reports that provide lessons learned for continuous improvement.
  • Supports the area for timely resolution of machinery issues leading to unplanned downtime.
  • Monitors history and condition of rotating equipment to determine and prioritize major maintenance scopes and requirements, including obsolescence aspects. Provides business case justifications as required to support required budgeting and timings for assigned plant locations.
  • Monitors the use of condition monitoring techniques for rotating machinery for the area. Routinely reviews condition-based vendor data reports and provides recommendations and necessary repair plans for any noted deficiencies to ensure reliable operation (Lube oil analysis, Vibration analysis, etc.).
  • Assesses the technical competency of contractors and service providers to ensure proper scope is assigned and the expected quality is received.
Required Skills
  • Demonstrated exceptional operational safety leadership.
  • Self-started and self-directed with ability to manage multiple activities.
  • Good technical and communication skills with solid interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced working with installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of compressors, pumps, fans, turbines, blowers, gearboxes, and their auxiliary systems.
  • Knowledge of predictive maintenance methodologies and technologies as well as interpretation of the data (Vibration monitoring, oil analysis, thermography, etc.).
  • Knowledge and experience working with and troubleshooting high speed rotating machinery.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 7-10 years of combined experience with at least 5 years in an operational and engineering environment working with rotating machinery.
  • Must be able to travel 30-40% (60-80 nights per year), often on less than 10 days notice.
