About the Organization

Founded in 2019 by Doug Seaton, a long‑time Minnesota labor and employment attorney, the Upper Midwest Law Center (UMLC) initiates pro‑freedom litigation to protect against government overreach, special interest agendas, constitutional violations, and public union corruption and abuses. UMLC is a center‑right, non‑profit, public interest law firm that provides free legal representation to individuals and businesses affected by these issues.

About the Role

The Upper Midwest Law Center is seeking a **Senior Litigation Attorney** to join our suburban Minneapolis, MN office. The role requires an experienced, innovative and detail‑oriented attorney who loves liberty and the rule of law. You will spearhead multiple cases, handle witness interviews, prepare depositions, serve on discovery, draft pleadings and briefs, argue motions, and guide junior attorneys.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Brainstorms and spearheads new cases, with board approval, critical to UMLC’s mission;
  • Conducts research and interviews clients and witnesses;
  • Drafts pleadings, including complaints, petitions, etc.;
  • Prepares and responds to written discovery, and defends depositions;
  • Drafts motion papers and briefs in state and federal trial and appellate courts;
  • Argues hearings before state and federal trial and appellate courts;
  • Interacts with media regarding cases and issues;
  • Works with law clerks and other attorneys in managing workloads and cases;
  • Works under the direction of the President and General Counsel and other attorneys as required.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and a J.D. from an accredited law school, with active bar membership in Minnesota or the ability to join the Minnesota bar by motion (see Rule 7);
  • Minimum of 6 years of litigation experience;
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills for a fast‑paced, collaborative environment;
  • Ability to synthesize complex legal and technical information into actionable insights for non‑legal audiences and donors;
  • Proficiency with legal software (e.g., Clio);
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and strategic thinking, with sound judgment in ambiguous situations;
  • Ability to travel up to 10%;
  • Preferred experience leading other attorneys.
Location, Compensation, and Benefits

This is a full‑time, hybrid position based in UMLC’s Minneapolis, MN office, with at least two days per week required in‑office.

The salary range for this role is $150,000 – $175,000, depending on the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate. Additional benefits include:
