Job summary

Clayco / LJC is seeking a Lab Planner to join our Life Sciences practice. You will lead planning, programming and design of lab environments across a range of projects, translating scientific workflows into efficient spaces.

You will mentor junior staff, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, ensure compliance with NIH/CDC/BSL/GMP/ISO/LEED, and contribute to proposals and client interviews. This role is on-site with nationwide travel as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture, Laboratory Planning, Engineering, or related field.
• 10+ years of experience in laboratory planning and design within life sciences.
• Professional licensure (RA) preferred but not required.
• Knowledge of laboratory typologies, equipment, operational needs, and planning strategies.

Responsibilities

• Lead planning, programming and design of laboratory and research facilities across life sciences projects.
• Develop layouts, workflows, and spatial requirements optimizing functionality, safety and adaptability.
• Integrate technical, operational, regulatory, and sustainability considerations into planning and design.
• Collaborate with architects, engineers and consultants to develop efficient laboratory designs.
• Support compliance with NIH, CDC, BSL, GMP, ISO and LEED requirements.
• Plan and coordinate laboratory casework, furniture, equipment, and utilities in alignment with user needs.
• Mentor junior lab planners, architects, and designers; support professional development.
• Support business development through proposals, planning concepts, and client interviews.
• Promote one-team collaboration across disciplines and offices.
