Role Summary:

GridStor is looking for a Large Loads Solutions Engineer to lead technical discussions and value propositions as GridStor’s representative in front of hyperscalers, colocation providers, and AIDC developers. You will be the primary technical owner for these fast paced large loads opportunities. This role requires a blend of high-level conceptual design, sharp understanding of economic dispatch and value stacking of energy storage solutions applied to BTM customers, and sophisticated stakeholder management to move projects toward a successful Final Investment Decision. This position will report to the Director of Preconstruction and will be based in Portland, OR, with a hybrid work schedule.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engineering & Design (Conceptual to 30%)
    • Develop hybrid system designs (storage + generation) with controls and dispatch strategy.
    • Progress to 30% design packages, including site layouts, single-line diagrams, and civil, structural, and electrical site plans. Ready project for handover at FID to construction team.
    • Lead the technical components of RFI/RFPs for large loads. Determine optimal system configurations, sizing, and the Bill of Materials (BOM) including BESS, PCS, and Medium Voltage (MV) transformers.
    • Support modeling and grid simulations to demonstrate project specific solutions for use-cases such as load smoothing, voltage ride-through, frequency support, and grid-forming.
    • Develop technical bulletins, case studies, and other related internal and external-facing technical documentation.
  • Strategy and Value Proposition
    • Be the technical interface with large load customers
    • Define strategies (which type of offtakes to target) for large load/data center applications including transient for load smoothing, frequency/voltage ride through and other applicable modes.
    • Support build-out and preparing of techno-economic models optimizing revenue, capex, opex and technical design constraints
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Partner directly with the VP of Business Development and T&I Director to draft and execute technical exhibits for offtake agreements.
Qualifications & Competencies:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Power Systems Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Experience: A minimum of 5 years in technical sales, applications engineering or systems engineering in renewable energy or critical power industry. Direct experience in data center power systems highly preferred.
  • Location & Availability: Preference to be based in one of GridStor’s hub offices in Portland, Los Angeles or Denver, and to work a hybrid schedule.
  • Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational abilities with keen attention to detail. Capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment and seeing delegated projects through to completion.
  • Adaptability: Ability to be agile and flexible, readily taking on tasks outside the typical scope of the role as needed.
  • Confidentiality: Proven ability to handle highly confidential information with utmost discretion.
  • Integrity & Judgment: Strong track record of excellent judgment and integrity in previous roles.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in AutoCad, Bluebeam, or SKM for electrical design; Experience in dynamic grid modeling (PSCAD or similar) highly beneficial.
  • Understanding of industry best practices for designing and building utility-scale energy storage projects. Knowledge of codes and standards as it relates to data centers / large loads design including grid interconnect
  • Commercial Acumen: Proven track record of supporting successful B2B contract negotiations, RFI/RFP’s and customer-facing presentations
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written and interpersonal communication skills, and ability to effectively work with cross functional stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Adaptable, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively and approach challenges with a creative, proactive mindset.
  • Team Orientation: Highly motivated to support and collaborate with team members, contributing to collective success.

Company Operating Principles:

GridStor’s Operating Principles represent who we are, how we work, and what we believe.

We Collaborate.

We believe trust is given, not earned. We honor each other’s zone of genius and seek to challenge ideas, not each other. We listen to each other’s points of view and work hard to find the better solution. We are one team.

We Are Humble.

We like hard work, but don’t make work hard. We know we have a lot to learn and never grandstand or take up all the space in the room. We are kind. We are welcoming. We are inspired by our mission to decarbonize the grid.

We Create the Future.

We are curious. We go deep, search for the best idea, and then move fast. We always focus on the few things that matter most. We know there will be setbacks, so we show up every day ready to learn and be better, together.

We Show Up for Each Other.

We keep each other fully informed. We seek to understand. We coach, we don’t blame. We share our points of view and seek to make each other better every day. We believe everyone creates culture in every moment, every day.

We Do Hard Things.

We view challenges as opportunities. We are resilient. We are all owners, and we act like it. We understand change requires taking risks and we push ourselves and our partners. We do what is right as opposed to what might be best for any one of us.
