Terrestris, an innovative contractor supporting the U.S. Coast Guard TRACEN Birmingham Southern, seeks a Lead HVAC Mechanic to lead the HVAC&R team across multiple campus facilities.

You will oversee inventory, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs, ensuring compliance with EPA 608 and safety standards. Qualifications

• Demonstrated commercial or industrial HVAC&R experience.
• Knowledge of shore-side ventilation, HVAC&R equipment, systems.
• Experience with centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, AHUs, and building controls.
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting in electrical, refrigerant, and hydronic systems.

We are seeking a Lead HVAC Mechanic for Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic Services supporting the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center (TRACEN) Birmingham Southern in Birmingham, Alabama.

This project will provide professional HVAC&R maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, corrective repair, equipment assessment, and work-order support for the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center Birmingham Southern Facilities Engineering Department. The requirement encompasses HVAC&R systems supporting sixteen campus facilities.

This is an on-site position at U.S. Coast Guard TRACEN Birmingham, Alabama, Monday-Friday. On-site access is generally available between 0730 and 1600 CST; Terrestris is responsible for managing and scheduling its workforce to meet contract performance requirements.

So, what will the Lead HVAC Mechanic at Terrestris do?

The Lead HVAC Mechanic will serve as the senior technical member of the Terrestris HVAC&R team and will be responsible for leading contractor performance under the PWS. This position is designated as Key Personnel and is responsible for all Contractor work performed under the requirement.

The Lead HVAC Mechanic will lead and perform HVAC&R equipment inventory and condition assessments, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, diagnostics, corrective repairs, operational testing, and work-order execution across the TRACEN Birmingham campus.

What does a typical day look like for a Lead HVAC Mechanic?

You will:

• Lead and coordinate the work of the Terrestris HVAC&R team, including Journeyman and Apprentice personnel.


• Conduct and oversee physical inventories and condition assessments of HVAC&R equipment across designated campus facilities.


• Diagnose and troubleshoot commercial and industrial HVAC&R systems and associated electrical and mechanical subsystems.


• Perform and oversee preventative maintenance in accordance with OEM recommendations and applicable industry standards.


• Work with direct expansion (DX) split systems, package units, chilled water systems, air handling units (AHUs), refrigeration appliances, centrifugal and air-cooled chillers, cooling towers, heat reclaim units, automated building controls, exhaust and ventilation fans, hydronic pumps, and associated systems.


• Identify equipment deficiencies, safety concerns, and potential repair requirements.


• Prepare and review repair assessments, including root-cause analysis, Bills of Materials (BOMs), OEM part numbers, and labor-hour estimates.


• Execute authorized corrective maintenance work orders and ensure work remains within authorized scope and labor hours.


• Conduct operational testing under load following completed repairs and ensure equipment is returned to service following Government acceptance.


• Maintain accurate equipment inventory, preventative maintenance, repair, and work-order documentation.


• Ensure refrigerant recovery, charging, recycling, and disposal activities comply with EPA Section 608 requirements.


• Ensure all work complies with OSHA, USCG, Federal, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), fall protection, NFPA 70E electrical safety, and confined-space requirements.


• Mentor and provide technical guidance to Journeyman and Apprentice personnel.


• Communicate with the Government Technical Representative (GTR) regarding equipment conditions, maintenance, repairs, testing, and work-order status.


• Support required monthly PM, work-order, and refrigerant compliance reporting.

• Comprehensive knowledge of the refrigeration cycle for commercial and industrial systems.


• Proven ability to locate and inspect for refrigerant leaks, apply prescribed testing procedures, and diagnose equipment failures.


• Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and manufacturer technical documentation.


• Knowledge of air-conditioning and refrigerant tables.


• Valid EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.


• Ability to read, write, speak, and communicate effectively in English.


• Demonstrated ability to lead HVAC&R personnel and manage competing maintenance and repair requirements.


• Ability to work safely in mechanical rooms, rooftops, electrical rooms, and other designated facility areas.
