Serve as the primary technical contact across project teams, mentor junior staff, and manage layout deliverables from planning through turnover.
Job Description
Role
The Senior Layout Designer / Layout Engineer will lead planning and design of process equipment and tool installations for semiconductor fabrication and other high-tech manufacturing facilities. This role is the primary technical point of contact for project managers, discipline leads, clients, vendors, and contractors and focuses on delivering practical, code-compliant, and constructible layout solutions while mentoring junior team members.
AI and Innovation
The company provides responsible access to industry-leading AI large language models and vibe-coding platforms, with training and support to integrate these tools into daily workflows to improve productivity and streamline design processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead planning of production facilities and equipment layouts, optimizing space and resolving process flow constraints.
- Interpret supplier equipment drawings and establish standards for tool CAD blocks (2D/3D) and Revit RFAs developed from supplier documentation.
- Develop manufacturing process layouts for greenfield and retrofit projects based on tool quantities, priorities, and available information.
- Perform and review design calculations, routing evaluations, and technical assessments for process utilities, support systems, and equipment interfaces.
- Prepare and review drawings, models, and documentation for tool connections, equipment clearances, utility routing, service access, and facility integration.
- Coordinate with project managers, discipline leads, clients, vendors, and contractors to resolve interface conflicts and installation constraints across project phases.
- Represent the layout discipline in design reviews, client meetings, and coordination workshops; manage revisions and align work with scope, budget, and schedule.
- Conduct site walks, verify field conditions, identify clashes or scope gaps, and lead risk identification and mitigation related to schedule, safety, and sequencing.
- Manage package turnover including as-built information, redlines, closeout comments, and construction support documentation.
- Ensure compliance with client safety protocols, cleanroom requirements, contamination control, and applicable codes (e.g., National Fire Code, National Electrical Code).
- Mentor and review work of junior engineers and designers.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or related engineering discipline, or equivalent layout experience.
- Approximately 7 to 10+ years of relevant experience supporting semiconductor, high-tech, cleanroom, tool install, or process equipment installation projects.
- Deep understanding of layout philosophies (product line, process layout, cellular manufacturing, densepack vs flexible layouts).
- Strong knowledge of tool hookup design, subfab rack and lateral systems, utility coordination, and facility modifications in semiconductor environments.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical coordination and drawing review with attention to constructability, safety, and code compliance.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including client-facing presentations.
- Familiarity with Automated Material Handling systems.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD required; proficiency with Revit and Revit RFA development desirable.
- Strong organizational skills, problem solving, engineering judgment, and ownership of technical issues.
- Experience mentoring or supervising designers and junior engineers.
