Job description

Senior Journals Manager

Location: United States (Remote/Hybrid)

Salary: $70,000-$90,000 + great benefits

We are partnering with a respected US-based society publisher in the physical sciences to recruit a Senior Journals Manager to support and grow a high-quality portfolio of peer-reviewed journals within a robust Open Access framework.

This is a pivotal role for an experienced scholarly publishing professional who has demonstrated responsibility for building and managing journal portfolios, with a strong grasp of the peer review process, publication ethics, and the evolving open science landscape. Working closely with editorial boards and internal stakeholders, you will act as the primary point of contact for journal performance, overseeing key publishing metrics and helping to shape strategic direction across the portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and deliver journal strategy for assigned titles, ensuring alignment with wider portfolio objectives and performance against key editorial and financial metrics, including submissions, acceptance rates, time to publication, and journal performance indicators
  • Act as the primary point of contact for journal performance, analysing data, monitoring trends, and using insights to inform development priorities and competitive positioning
  • Partner closely with Editors and editorial boards to shape content strategies, support commissioning in highimpact and emerging research areas, and manage the full editorial board lifecycle
  • Champion editorial best practices and research integrity, leading policy enforcement and contributing to the development of consistent, highquality editorial guidelines
  • Collaborate crossfunctionally with editorial operations, content, marketing, open science, and transformation teams to optimise workflows, improve publication timelines, and enhance the user experience
  • Engage with research communities, building strong relationships through conferences, meetings, and outreach to support journal visibility, submission growth, and contributor diversity
  • Contribute to innovation and change initiatives, sharing researcher feedback, supporting product development, and representing the editorial perspective in organisational projects
  • Mentor and support junior colleagues, promoting knowledge sharing, professional development, and a collaborative team culture

This position can be based anywhere in the United States, with limited travel (approximately 4-5 conferences per year). The society offers a competitive salary, very generous PTO, and an excellent benefits package, alongside the chance to work at the heart of a mission driven organization supporting the global physical sciences community.
