Job summary

Schwab Technology Services in Austin, TX is seeking a senior software engineer to design, build, test, deploy, and support scalable Java applications and REST APIs for our high-volume messaging platform.

You will partner with technical leads, Product Owners, and Agile teams to deliver reliable services, mentor juniors, and contribute to automated testing, CI/CD, and AI-assisted development tools. Hybrid in-office work is required.

Schwab Technology Services provides innovative, reliable technology that helps clients and advisors manage their financial lives. Within Cross Enterprise Services, the Digital Messaging Technology team supports the high-volume platforms that deliver email, push notifications, SMS, and other communications across Schwab.

In this role, you will design, build, test, deploy, and support scalable Java applications, REST APIs, and backend services across the messaging platform. You will partner with technical leads, Product Owners, and distributed Agile teams to solve complex problems, make thoughtful design decisions, strengthen platform reliability, and deliver capabilities that improve the client experience.

Your impact will extend beyond development through mentoring, technical documentation, automated testing, CI/CD improvements, and the responsible use of AI-assisted development tools. Success requires strong problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability as priorities and technologies evolve.

What you have

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 9+ years of professional software development experience building enterprise web applications, including full-stack Java development and mentoring junior developers.
• 5+ years of experience building REST services for high-volume, highly available environments.
• 6+ years of experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including SQL, Oracle, and MongoDB.
• 4+ years of experience with Pivotal Cloud Foundry.
• Experience designing and implementing RESTful services using Spring Boot.
• Experience applying software design patterns and SOLID principles to scalable application development.
• Experience translating requirements into technical designs and testing solutions through unit, functional, integration, and end-to-end testing.
• Experience with CI/CD concepts, API test automation, and automated deployment pipelines.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, to improve productivity, code quality, and delivery outcomes.
• Ability to collaborate with technical and business stakeholders, make sound decisions, and manage competing priorities in a distributed environment.
• Ability to work in a hybrid model. This role is not eligible for fully remote work.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with the Atlassian tool suite, including Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, and Bamboo.
• Experience with Spring Batch processing.
• Experience working in financial services or another highly regulated environment.
• Experience contributing within Agile teams and adapting to changing priorities.
• Ability to research, create, and maintain architecture, design, API, and environment documentation.
• Ability to contribute across the technology stack and learn new capabilities as the platform evolves.
• Curiosity about emerging AI and automation tools and how they can improve engineering efficiency and software quality.
