Job summary

HDR is seeking a Senior ITS Engineer in Kansas City, Missouri, to lead advanced technology projects involving ITS and transportation technology systems. The role entails overseeing planning, design, and operation for government agencies.

Job description

Overview

As an HDR Senior ITS Engineer in the Advanced Technology for Surface Transportation (ATST) business class, you will lead planning, design, integration, deployment, and operation of ITS and transportation technology systems for government agencies in Missouri, Kansas, and nationally.

Responsibilities
  • Lead planning, design, integration, deployment, and operations of ITS and transportation technology systems including communications networks, ATMS/TMC systems, field devices, corridor technology solutions, traffic signal systems, and roadway lighting.
  • Lead and support development and implementation of TSMO, connected vehicle, digital infrastructure, and emerging mobility initiatives for state and local agencies.
  • Prepare PS&E packages, systems engineering documentation, ITS architectures, and technical analyses for transportation technology projects.
  • Serve as a technical resource and client‑facing representative for transportation technology initiatives regionally and nationally.
  • Support project delivery activities including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, coordination, and client communication.
  • Establish client relationships and play significant roles in marketing, contractual, design, and production activities.
  • Coordinate project staffing and workloads with business class leadership.
  • Implement QA/QC procedures.
  • Assist with development of Federal USDOT Grant applications for government agencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MSCE in a related discipline.
  • Diverse experience in toll roads, roadway design, or construction.
  • Interest in client development, mentoring, and growing transportation technology services.
  • Experience working with state DOTs, local agencies, and Federal government.
  • Active role in professional organizations.
  • Familiarity with Traffic Engineering concepts such as signal timing, ATSPMs, adaptive traffic control systems, priority systems, and traffic‑responsive systems.
  • Understanding of fiber optic networks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Interest in or progress toward Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in ITS and traffic engineering for urban and rural highways, major and minor interchanges and intersections.
  • Professional engineering license (PE or equivalent) recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered.
  • Knowledge of regulations of state and federal transportation agencies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience using HCS, CORSIM, Synchro/SIM Traffic and other software packages.
  • Strong oral and written communication, presentation skills, and ability to work in a team environment.
